A Garden of Hope

February 19th, 2013

Most of you know that Mr Chiots and I own a business and part of that business involves video production. One of my college girlfriends works for Girl Power 2 Cure, an organization the supports families of girls with Rett Syndrome. My friend Kelly’s daughter Brooklyn was diagnosed with Rett many years ago (to read more about her, head on over to her blog Special Mommy X2). Mr Chiots and have always donated our time and talents for non-profits. Last spring we traveled out to Indiana to make a video about the Girl Power 2 Cure Garden of Hope. Here it is:

Today we are traveling back to the States from South America. We were in Colombia for the past 10 days filming a video for my parents non-profit. Perhaps I’ll share the video soon that we produced while we were down there.

Do you make an effort to donate your time and talents to charities?

    Wow! That’s an amazing garden.

We are still finding our way along this farming adventure, but one of our first orders of business was to find the local food bank and make a commitment to them. We end up donating 3 to 4 dozen eggs a month and soon will be adding veg and fruit to that donation as well. It’s something i’m passionate about…i hate seeing food banks filled with industrialized food products and the poorest among us forced to eat it and suffer even more.

This is a great idea and something I hadn’t thought of before. Thanks for bringing that to my (our) attention.

When I think of food banks, I think of foods that have a shelf-life. I’m sure fresh foods are needed as well!

I love dropping off eggs at the local food bank. I’m sure most of the people receiving eggs have never had fresh organic free range eggs before, and like thinking of how much they will enjoy them when they try them. Of course, maybe they think there is something wrong with them since they don’t look anything like what they are used to!

I’ve only dontated time to a couple Employee Volunteer Committee activities. One we went out to a few different homes of the elderly in our work community and cleaned & cleared yards, painted inside & out & other types of manual labor. It was a great day & a great turnout..
Another time we made food to serve at a Ronald McDonald house.. I didnt go with them to the actual facility but I did provide food.. We also did lots of activities with the intent of gathering & submitting donations for whatever entity we were helping at the time. Most of this was done at work and ranged from baby stuff for the childrens hospital, books for a learning center, coats for the poor to gift packs for soldiers.
I give more cash than time or energy to quite a few non-profits. We give what we have, and at the time, its what I had more of.

    Suzy,

With all due respect, I find it invasive and disruptive when a web page auto-plays video or audio. I’m in the middle of reading your text, and all of the sudden, I’m thinking, “Where is that sound coming from?!” I wish you would leave me the option of choosing when I start watching your video, instead of playing it automatically when I load your page.

… and as I just learned, it’s double annoying, because each time I reload the page, such as after I leave a comment, the video starts playing again, even though I’ve already watched it.

Here it comes again, as soon as I click “submit”…

Joshua, First of all… CALM DOWN!

Susy and I don’t like videos that autoplay either. The organization set up the video that way. I changed the embed code so that it will not do that but it was not an option when Susy was writing this post nor did she realize it did it.

      You’re welcome!

Thanks so much. Normally, I just close the window of the site and walk away, but I’d hate to do that to Chiot’s Run.

I volunteer for several land trusts (plus, I work for one!), donate eggs or veggies to a local food bank when I have an overflow, and my neighbors and I have been gradually painting an older neighbors house for her over the past few years. I also lead nature walks once or twice a month, and occasionally volunteer to build a webpage for a non-profit. Other than the nature walks, these are all occasional efforts – nothing major. But with a family, a job, and a small farm I don’t have as much time to volunteer as I’d like to.
