Black Gold

April 27th, 2013

This past Wednesday, I headed up to Kinney Compost to look at their products. I met Wes Kinney, the owner, and we chatted while he gave me a tour of his place. Wes certainly has a love for compost and his products show it.

Sadly, I wasn’t able to make my own compost last year, I should say, I wasn’t able to pack it up and bring it with me to Maine. Thank goodness for people like Wes. Now I can have good quality compost for my garden even though I wasn’t able to make it myself.

I’m already setting up my compost pile for next year, so this should be the only time I need to purchase it. That’s a good thing, because good quality compost isn’t cheap!

Do you make your own compost?

I have been making compost for more than 20 years and in fact composting has been part of my life ever since i can remember. Growing up my father had lots of animals and collected the manure to compost it for the garden. It is in my blood. I was even crowned Compost Queen at my community garden in Brooklyn NY. Now am living in the Caribbean and composting is a big part of my gardening experience. We have lots of coconuts and gathering the coconut shells and husk is a new composting experience for me and the result I as a seed starting mix..

We do make our own compost. This Spring when we added new garden beds it was nice to have a local company – missouriorganic.com – from which to buy a large amount of compost to fill those beds with since we didn’t have enough from our own pile.

Yes, I do.. Today I have a decent sized compost tumbler where I make compost.. In my younger days I had lots of room & I had loads of huge smoking compost piles.. Theres just something so satisfying about a beautiful compost pile..

Your Mr Kenney sure has some gorgeous stuff there…

The community garden puts out huge piles of compost every spring, but I dont know where it comes from so I’ve never used it.. I’ll have to ask this year!

I do make my own compost but sometimes have to supplement. I’m getting a bigger garden space in a little over a week and am going to have to come up with a better compost plan to support it. :-)

We make our own compost, but never have enough (most everything goes to the chickens not the compost pile), so supplement with manure. I have a big pile of horse manure going but want to age it for another year, so I’ll order some aged cow manure this week.

I do make my own compost out of chicken house manure and shavings, goat house manure and straw, and rabbit and peat moss along with clippings, seaweed etc. I would absolutely love a truck of Kinney’s compost dumped in my garden.

I just learned today that my county offers free compost! I’ll need to get some fast before it’s gone though!

I’m trying to convince my hubby that a compost pile is a good idea. He’s not so easy to sway on this matter :\

Caroline, please be careful using the county’s free compost. I’m not certain what is in that stuff. I use a composter that is on a stand off the ground and gets tumbled occasionally to turn it. Perhaps your husband would like a system like that better. It certainly cuts down on creepy bugs like cockroaches.

Yes. Make my own but purchase compost as well.

I use my own, but this is the first year I have had enough so far without buying some as well. That is some beautiful stuff in those pictures!
