Friday Favorite: Farm Stands

May 10th, 2013

I have to admit, I’m a sucker for a farm stand. Whenever I see a sign like this, I slam on the brakes to see what they’ve got. Last Saturday, on my way between plant sales, I spotted this beautiful farm on a back road.

Lucky me, I scored a few bags of spinach and very spicy tiny leaved salad mix. Mr Chiots and I especially love seeing these when we’re out traveling. It certainly makes adding local vegetable to your plate much easier wherever you are.

I especially love little stands like this that work on the honor system. There’s something so comforting about knowing that there are still honest folks in the world and things like this still work.

Do you ever stop when you see signs like this while traveling?

Love the farm stands. Even if we are traveling we will stop and see what they have. Lots of places here do the honor system for fresh cut flowers and berry picking.

A lot of farm stands around here use the honor system. A shock for a former city girl from Jersey :) One of my favorites was robbed a few years ago. The community was outraged and even more supportive of that farm. We never did find out who robbed that farm. She had to switch to a locked box, which meant that you can’t get change anymore, but she still accepts IOUs.

Haven’t seen any like that around here, although our honey purveyor still works on the honor system. It’s a step back in time…

I do stop. I’m a home health nurse so I travel all day long and it’s nearly impossible for me not to stop. I am a sucker for plant sales too. There’s an old couple who sell corn in our town on the honor system. They’ve done it for as long as I’ve known them.

I am a little envious of all of you that have neat farm stands or good farmers markets. We have a farmers market, but it really isn’t that great, and you rarely ever see a farm stand.

I’m swoon for farmstands too. We have a few here, and our milk share runs one on the honour system selling meat, dry bean soup mixes, dairy products, and seasonal veg.

I also have an honour system egg stand. I figure if someone is going to steal $5 worth of eggs, they must really need them more than i need $5. Someday i am hoping to convert another outbuilding into a farmstand with a canning studio in it.

I saw a stand once up north near Bellingham, WA that had a creative solution to balance use honour system but securing cash. They sliced open tennis balls, into which a customer would insert cash. Then the customer would insert the ball into the “beak” of the chicken painted on the wall, which was connected to a french drain pipe that ran into a bucket on the other side of their fence. Perfect solution, especially for the children of the families visiting!

I don’t remember seeing (or perhaps noticing?) farm stands before – but the side of town we moved to is more rural, so perhaps this summer!

Oh, I have moved to the land of the farmers markets! Just north of Asheville, NC, and it’s funny because there’s the HUGE farmers market that WNC is known for, but that one tends to have the larger distributors so the locals hit the multiple satellite markets instead for the smaller farms goods…they’re delightful!
