The Chicken BBQ
There’s something about firemen and chicken BBQ. In Ohio, the firehouses all had chicken BBQs to raise funds and here in Maine it is no different. If you don’t listen to the podcast, you might not realize that Mr Chiots joined the volunteer fire department. As a result, he’s now heading out to the firehouse bright and early to spend the day watching the chickens on the grill.
The only problem with this is that we now have a radio on all the time and hear all the local fire and EMS calls.
I’m most likely going to be joining my neighbors for a boat parade on the lake in the morning and then we’ll be off to see how good Mr Chiots is with a grill and hundreds of chickens.
How will you be celebrating this holiday if you live in the US? Does your local fire dept host a chicken BBQ?

You guys have a great community. My husband and I really need to move to an area where community is embraced.

Lol…no that doesn’t happen here! Our local fire station is staffed fully by retained locals & to raise funds they do a car washing afternoon!

My mom and brother are on our local volunteer FD. They’ll both be driving fire trucks in our little parade today. Their big fundraiser is the Turkey Raffle–two nights of fast-paced gambling for Thanksgiving turkeys. The whole town turns out at the Civic Center to support the fire department, whose members drop everything and turn out for runs , no matter what the time of day. Go volunteers!!!

I hope this isn’t a picture of him running in his suit to the BBQ, I am pretty sure he doesn’t have to wear that today…even though there is a fire to cook this chicken over.

I’ve heard that radio go off many times … it’s always… interesting? :)
Have a great 4th of July today. And I’m sure the chicken will be great!

Firefighters are the biggest pyros I know! We have so many fireworks related disasters this day, the firefighters are too busy cooking. Some will be in the parade.
The big thing here with the FD is either a toys for tots drive or pancake breakfast. They are well funded with special prop taxes, so no fundraisers needed.
Enjoy the holiday. We are marching in the parade with a group hoping to get GMO labelled. Trying to help educate people in the community and exercise free speech on our beautiful holiday.

Ours does a 2 night drive in movie in August; they started it five years ago. It is awesome! They suspend a huge screen from two boom cranes (I have no idea if that is what they are really called) and they do a kid friendly/cartoon movie first and then an adult one after that. The sound is broadcast over the car radio. My next door neighbor started it and he says they make crazy money, both on the entrance fee per car and on concessions.
And then fireworks after each show….of course!

I have volunteered to work with Search and Rescue this summer. We are volunteers under the Sheriffs Department and get a lot of training from the EMT’s and the Fire Department. This Fourth of July my hat is off to both groups, they are truly special people.
