We want to get a pig, but it may not happen until I retire in a couple of years.

Missed you guys yesterday! Found the information fascinating, though I’ll probably never raise pigs. I do love to EAT them, however. :) Bacon is my favorite, with ham running a close second, and a good thick lean pork chop is always welcome on my plate too. You guys sure do spoil your piggies, and I think that’s wonderful. :) They get a good happy healthy life, you get good happy healthy bacon.
Thanks for the Geeky tip, Susy – I’m signing up for CatalogChoice right now. In our home, catalogs go straight from the mailbox to the recycle bin, we never even open them. What a waste! Glad to have a central way to stop them from entering our waste stream.

Thanks for answering all of my questions! You guys rock. My favorite cut of pork is pork chops with a cranberry sauce. Of course my hubby loves bacon, but I think all men do. I grabbed one of the out-of-print books, “Raising the Homestead Hog”. That really was an awesome episode, I took notes…thanks again. I’ll check out the books. I’m extremely interested in trying to raise pigs. Maybe I’ll try guinea hogs first, thanks for the tips.

When I wasn’t vegetarian my favorite type of pork was definitely pulled pork bbq or Cuban sandwiches.
I was one of the ones missing your podcast yesterday but was glad to have it today as my rounds for today was light. :)

Loved this podcast! I love to hear about pigs! The pigs started as my husbands project, but I’ve really grown to love them too! You are going to love guinea hogs if you get some. They are my favorite. Such a sweet temper on them. And they really do well being fed off of garden scraps and other produce.

This is completely off the topic of pigs – but that was the second blog/podcast that I read/heard in the past 12 hours that made a reference to The Matrix, likening it to the American status quo in some way. The other reference was an economics based one from an article I read over at Mr. Money Mustache. Just thought that was kinda interesting and I would share!
Enjoyed the podcast as always!

I’m with Susy – bacon is the best! (Though now Misti has made me hungry for a pulled pork sandwich….) Fun podcast, though pigs are far, far in our future, if at all.
Count me in as one who looks forward to podcast Mondays, though it’s always a treat no matter what day. :)

Not that fond of fresh pork but I do love good bacon, ham, sausages.
It’s been years since I kept pigs…they are great fun to have about and jolly handy for eating up veg waste from the garden.

Just a note about pigs: 1-make sure they have a place to lay around in the mud to cool off. Pigs don’t sweat and can easily overheat and die 2- Line up your butcher (if you are not going to do this yourself) early, the late fall is prime time at the butcher’s place.

Yes, ours have a nice wallow that they were enjoying today since it’s HOT!

Bacon is hands down a favorite around here. However, since purchasing a half carcass from friends a couple of years ago, ham has become a close second. Although not a “cut”, sausage is right up there too! Is there a cut of pork that is not delicious? This past winter I rendered lard for the first time too!
Thanks for all the great information. We’ve raised chickens and turkeys and now we have ducks. Over the past couple of years we’ve been trying to make more room for pigs and maybe lambs, but we’re not there yet. I’m looking forward to hearing more about your experience later on.
