Friday Favorite: Family Visits
For the past week, my parents have been visiting. We’ve seen a few sights, hiked, visited the ocean, chatted, walked around the garden, drank some coffee and of course we’ve eaten a respectable amount of ice cream.
My parents seemed particularly fond of the menagerie here at Chiot’s Run. They loves giving the pigs snacks and my mom kept a keen eye on the ducklings, herding them back to their pool when they wandered off into the woods.
It’s always nice to visit with family, especially now that we are separated by many miles. Usually we’re the ones that end up traveling back to Ohio where they all live, but it sure is nice to share our neck of the woods with those closest to us.
Does your family live nearby or far away?

I live in NH. My family is in NJ. A good 8 hour trip if the traffic isn’t too bad. We try to make it down for a few days in the winter while the kids are on break and for a week in the summer. Wished that they lived closer though.

Way, WAY too far away. Traveling with two little kids from our area in upstate New York (a three-hour drive to the nearest major airport) to Arizona is a serious endeavor. It sucks. My husband has a lot of family right here, but . . . well, they’re my in-laws. Not the same, you know?

I love that I am back in Texas and close to family again, no matter that I miss Florida a whole heck of a lot. Maybe someday we’ll end up back in Florida.
But those Maine lakes in the first photo…*drool* and the slab of rock…that’s Maine hiking right there!

We are in RI and my husbands family is in OH. Toronto, OH. We are headed there in Oct to visit Amish country and then we are trekking to the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame. I love visiting them!

Susy, looks like you are having a great time with your family. My family either lives with me or live far far away. I get to them every day or only once a year on my annual pilgrimage to Nevada via Wyoming. The only contact with the younger grandchildren is through holiday and birthday cards. I send about six of those a year. It tough to stay connected with grandchildren when they live so far away.
In all my travels across the country, I’ve not visited the northeast part of the country. My sister who travels allot says it’s a wonderful place to visit but alas, I’m thinking it probably won’t happen in this life time. I’m just not a person that travels to see things for pleasure. Their has to be a reason to go some where.
Have a great day with your family.

My family lives fairly close which is nice. We are lucky today that travel methods and technology make visiting easier than it was so long ago. I was watching a show about pioneers and they brought up that when people came from Europe to Canada they often never saw their family again. That would be quite a decision to make! Today we can Skype or hop a plane and still stay in touch.

We’re in SE Ohio and both our kids and grandkids live 2 hours away in eastern Kentucky. We see them as we’re down there every week, but it’s not like being close enough to have them over on a midweek evening for supper. That being said, sometimes 2 hours is a world away, and sometimes, I admit (though not to them, of course) that it’s not far enough! :) Love you J and A!

My oldest daughter lives in Chicago, a good 7 hour drive from my home. Luckily, I enjoy traveling and have the freedom to see her every two or three months. I loved it when she lived nearby for a year after college, but this is where her career has taken her, and it’s fun to visit.

About three years ago I built a house right next door to my parents’ house. I feel incredibly lucky that family is just a quick drive away…or a short walk down a wooded path!

My parents lived in upstate NY but visited Maine 3-4 times a year. Then it came my turn and I made the trip monthly although it was more often when Mom suffered a broken hip. Mom passed in 2008 and at her request her ashes were placed on Little Moose Island off Schoodic Penninsula. I made the trip monthly until this July when I moved my 96.5 year old Dad to a facility here. This week he’ll be moving to another facility and hopefully a better situation. I do wish they could have moved here while they could still enjoy hiking etc. Guess that is life.

i have one daughter living in the next town over & 2 step kids that live local too.
My other daughter is in North Texas 1200 miles away as is my mother, brother & many other family members. Her family settled in the region in the late 1800s so there are loads of them there..
My dad is 2000 mileas away in the South Texas region his family settled in during the last 1800s so there are quite a few there as well..
So yeah.. my family is far far away..

Oh the break wall at Rockland Harbor! We miss our yearly trek to Maine and hope to make it back next year. You should visit Primo restaurant in Rockland and see what Chef Melissa Kelly has to offer. She grows most of her ingredients right there. And a visit to Jess’s Market for lobsters is a must. If you do tell Jess the folks from Syracuse NY said hello.
