Missing

September 5th, 2013

I’m really missing that extra sunlight from summer. Technically it’s still summer, but the days are getting noticeably shorter. It’s getting dark around 7:30 here and that’s just too soon for me. Even in summer there aren’t enough hours in the day to get done what I need to, but this time of year it’s a constant race against sunset.

Last night I mowed until I couldn’t see any more and I still didn’t get it all finished. With all the rain we’ve been having, yesterday was our only dry day. I was trying to mow the entire yard before the rain comes again, I almost finished the job, but not quite.

Are you noticing fewer daylight hours?

Oh yes! Outdoor activities are wrapping up earlier and earlier and it’s terribly dark when I get up at five o’clock.

Susy, yes indeed the days are getting shorter. The day I always dread is the day we come off of daylight savings time. Overnight a whole hour of daylight is lost. The summer has really passed by quickly this year. I’m going to have a tremendous tomato harvest this year. It took awhile to get started but wow is it prolific.

Have a great daylight day on the homestead.

I’m dreading it too, it’s such a shock the next day!

Absolutely… I can’t do a whole lot outside until we get the kids in bed, usually around 7. In June, I had a good two or 2 1/2 hours to work with; now it’s dark at 8.

Our summer has been stolen by rain. We haven’t even had that late August time with no mosquitoes that is always so nice. I’ve found myself doing night chores by headlamp already. Oh well, another summer in Paradise has blown by.

About two weeks ago I noticed the light seemed different. The color was changing. The chickens are going to bed sooner and getting up later. In the evening we are turning on the house lights earlier. We have had one of the most perfect summers I can remember, saying good bye to sunmmer will be difficult. I will miss the extra daylight hours, but welcome the cozy days of autumn.

I too miss the early sun to wake me and time enough after supper to enjoy the sunset in full. But I can only “wish” I had a lawn to mow. In my part of Iowa we’ve only had .6 of an inch of rain since the end of June and have only mowed the lawn once since the 4th of July. Guess it’s true this year. The grass IS greener on the other side.

Definitely noticing the change! I find I’m ready for bed around 9:30pm instead of around 11pm like usual. I’ll look at my clock thinking “Surely it’s midnight!… oh, only 9pm eh? hm”

Much like you Nebraska Dave- not looking forward to Daylight Savings. Can we just not this year?
