Friday Favorite: The Fair

September 6th, 2013

I grew up going to the Wayne County Fair in Ohio every year (at least when we were in the country).  It was a BLAST, one of my favorite things.  You can see what that fair is like in the post I wrote about it a LONG time ago.  Last Friday we attending the Windsor Fair with our neighbors.  It was just what a fair should be.  There were animals of all shapes and sizes, foods both fried and sweet (though we didn’t have lobster rolls at the fair in Ohio), there were quilts and vegetables on display and many wonderful educational items as well.

The fair is such a great way to bookend the summer, it’s always something I’ve really enjoyed. Perhaps some year I’ll enter a few of my veggies into the fair.

Do you attend your local fair?

Usually we go to the Union Fair and sometimes the Windsor Fair. My husband and son love to go to the demolition derby at the Union Fair – UGH (but Mr. Chiots might like it).

We almost always go to the Common Ground Fair, which you will soon see is the BEST fair in Maine – no rides or midway, just a lot of good down-to-earth food, crafts, gardens, working animals… It’s only open for three days and is incredibly crowded – I could spend all three days there just going to the educational seminars and wandering around looking at things if it weren’t so busy on the weekends that I just can’t cope with being there any day other than Friday! Maybe I’ll see you there this year.

We’re planning on going on Friday this year too. I think Mr Chiots might help with parking on the other days.

We attend the NH Sheep and Wool festival year. The entrance price is way cheaper then the other fairs and we get to visit with all the critters. And I get to purchase some beautiful yarns and fiber. Win – win!

I have Issues with the fair. Our state fair has some good stuff, but it’s an hour away and so huge it’s too much to manage. Our county fair devolved into nothing but midway rides and nasty food. So the agricultural component basically picked up and left, forming a completely separate event for the animal showing and so forth.

    Kind of depressing.

That stinks about the agricultural part, that’s always the best part of the fair!

Fun! We love county fairs, too! I recently wrote a post about our family tradition here: the Wayne County Fair!

Love the photos in this post. And that baby donkey is cute :)

Oh, and there were no lobster rolls at the Wayne County (NY) Fair, either… :)

I live in the Syracuse area and every year we have the Great NY state fair. I love the anamials and agricultural part parts but the whole thing is just so big. I gave up going because of the hassle. One thing I noticed about the pictures that you posted of the midway. It is SO CLEEN! AND EVERYONE SEEMS APPROPRIATELY DRESSED!

This made me laugh, because that very state fair I mentioned in my comment above is the NY State Fair. And the crowds there–especially at the Midway–are INFAMOUSLY trashy. There was a big deal a few years ago when the new fair director started requiring men to wear shirts. Yeah. Must not have been stringently enforced, because I still saw shirtless men. Although there are so many tasteless t-shirts, it’s a toss up whether the shirt or the lack of it is more offensive.

LOLOL!! Trasy T-shirts doesn’t even touch it. I saw a woman wearing mens underware as a top!
