Friday Favorite: Apples
This edition of Friday Favorites is for Mr Chiots. I’m actually not a huge fan of apples, in any way shape or form. Mr Chiots, on the other hand, LOVES apples any way he can get them.
We have a few different apple trees in the garden, lovely old apple trees. A few are over 100 yrs old and have many different kinds of apples grafted onto them. As the apple season is progressing, we’re tasting them and trying to figure out which varieties they are.
Just recently we picked a big bag of these beauties, I’m thinking they might be a Macintosh. We used them to bake a cheddar apple pie and I mixed the apples with pears, figs and cranberries for a winter fruit crumble (recipe in Rustic Fruit Desserts). The pie was so-so, the winter fruit crumble was AMAZING, and I don’t like cooked apples. They’re also great to eat out of hand. Mr Chiots is certainly in seventh heaven with so many apples to eat. Now all we need to do is get a cider press so we can make some cider!
Do you like apples? Do you like them cooked?

I’m not a fan of the new varieties. I prefer to find old trees and gather their fruit for applesauce, pies, jelly and crisps. One year, I found a particularly nice tasting apple with a lovely red skin. My sauce was great with no sweetener and had a lovely pink color.

The only time I like apples is when they are are just picked. I love homemade applesauce, pies and crisps. Wish I had some apple trees.

I love apples any way I can get them. We’ve gotten so many from our CSA this year, that I have taken to making and freezing huge batches of apple sauce. Then last week, I peeled and sliced them and have a big gallon freezer bag full of them.

My daughter loves apples! She eats apple sauce everyday w/ her oatmeal or cottage cheese, depending on the season. I just canned 17pt of peach apple sauce and 5pt of blueberry apple sauce. Still need to make strawberry and cranberry for her and of course cinnamon!
Last spring I ordered apple trees, but they were on back order. They were suppost to come this month to plant but now will not be here until spring. Oh well.

Love apples….fresh, cooked, dried, juiced etc.
We are gearing up for this years cider making and I shall also bottle fresh juice for drinking throughout the year.

Good morning Susy, looks like you had another busy day. I’m with Brian. Apple any thing is good. I love this time of the year here in Nebraska. The apple orchards (and there are many) are bursting at the seams with all kinds of apples. Schools take field trips to see the apple orchards. There’s only one thing that shouldn’t be done with apples and bury them inside a coat of caramel. Yeah, I know, kind of strange but I don’t like caramel apples. I don’t like foods that make my teeth stick together and I’m just not a big fan of sweet foods unless there’s apples involved.
Have a great apple day.

I’m not a big fan of the sticky teeth either.

I love apples and especially love them cooked; baked apples, apple pie etc. Oddly though, I’m not a huge fan of apple sauce but I will eat it some.

I like apples because they last so long but I’d much prefer if we could have peaches around longer!

I love apples, both cooked and just to eat like that.
One of my favourites is an apple bread & butter pudding.
Use an ovenproof deep dish (casserole form works great), butter it on all sides.
Grate some apples (with the skin on).
Make a mix of sugar and cinnamon to sprinkle.
Slice brioche bread and dip in a mix of milk and eggs (500 ml milk and 3eggs depending on the size of your casserole dish).
Layer the bread, then grated apple, then some raisins, then some sugar and cinnamon. Repeat, finish with a layer of bread. Add the remaining mix of milk and egg. Dot with butter and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon mix.
Bake at 180C for about 40 minutes to 1 hour. You may want to cover the top with aluminum foil should it get too dark.
Eat either as dessert for a group (with vanilla ice cream) or as a main meal. Tastes great cold.
One of my favourites in autumn or winter.

Sounds great, no doubt Mr Chiots will be requesting this when he seeds it!

I made this with gluten free bread in my crockpot. It was delicious and won the “make this anytime!” comment from DH. Thanks for the recipe!

I was never a huge apple fan until I moved to Ohio.. the varieties in the grocery store in Texas left a lot to be desired.
Today, I’ll say I like apples.. and I love a few varieties.. but not many.
I’ve never been a cooked fruit admirer except for bananas cooked in butter.. yum! But M’honey loves them & Im happy to make him happy.
I do like dehydrated apples though & plan to turn some of our current bounty into dried apples for snacks this year.

I love apples, but I’m realizing I love them best when they are in season and local. Ohio apples are pretty amazing. I’ve always loved applesauce, my dad makes a lot every year. I’m hoping we can go apple picking this weekend. I want applesauce and my hubby wants a pie.
Now that I’ve read the comments, I want to try the apple bread pudding. I don’t know if it’ll work gluten free, though.

Because apples are so healthy, I have started to include them as a staple in my diet, that and nuts and seeds. Quite a change from where I was at 10 years ago.

I love apples! Nothing beats homemade apple pie (grandma’s recipe) and cider. A word of caution: once you grow and your own, store-bought apples will taste, well, ‘meh’.
