Too Cute

October 19th, 2013

These ducklings are simply too cute.  I’ve said before that ducklings are my favorite little animals, ducks are one of my favorite adult animals as well.  It’s hard to get anything done around here with so much cuteness walking around.

I try to keep an eye on these guys to make sure none of the cats are going after them. Mama duck is one tough cookie, she’s even threatened to attack Tara if she comes too close, but I still like to make sure she’s not getting them too far away. We had an eagle flying very low yesterday and found her with the ducklings way down the driveway. The ducks are the only animals we have that aren’t behind an electric fence for protection. They aren’t behind a fence because they simply fly over it.

I love how the immediately take to water, if I had a deep enough pool they’d be swimming already. On a sad note, none of our guinea keets have survived. The cold weather was simply too much for them to handle, which is what I figured would happen.

Could you get work done with these cuties around?

No work with ducklings to watch. I even have a hard time not watching my turkeys for long periods. They are the most curious birds.

We have a hard time with that too. Hence, our brooder is behind the house, in line of sight of our dining room window, so at least 3 or 4 times a day we sit to enjoy a relaxing dose of cuteness.

Susy, it would be difficult to work with cuteness going on. I usually get so focused on the task at hand the wild turkeys in my garden will come within 10 feet and I don’t even know it. If I do happen to catch them out of the corner of my eye, I slowly turn toward them and talk to them. There little heads do that side ways thing like they really are trying to understand. I tell them that eating bugs and weed seeds are great. They can have all they want of that but please stay away from my sweet corn. (big sigh) So far that hasn’t worked. They like to scratch the seeds out of the ground and peck at the small sprouts when they come up. Once the corn gets to be about a foot or eighteen inches high they leave it alone. Because of the natural spring near my picnic table, they will come to drink and if I don’t move a whole flock will get a drink while I sit still. It is entertaining to watch nature, isn’t it.

Have a great day watching cuteness.

Nope :) We had 8 that hatched under a first time mama and they survived….She was CRAZY protective! Ducklings are precious for sure but wait until you get a look at baby bunnies…..When they are nursing and they all have their little bunny feetes sticking out from under mama….Oh My….and they are learning to hop…..You will be smitten….just say’n.

I wouldn’t get much done! I love baby chicks, but ducks are even cuter!

Aw, too bad about the keets. Nature, it’s sad sometimes. The duckling video you posted on Facebook (where I can read but cannot comment since I don’t have an account) was ADORABLE.
