Friday Favorite: Old Photos

November 15th, 2013

Four or five years ago I went through all of our old family slides and picked the best ones to be digitized.  I sent them off to a small company in California and they returned them on a DVD.  Every now and then I love looking at them, there’s something so fun about them.  Here are a few of my favorites (I’m the younger girl):
little kids 1
little kids 2
little kids 3
little kids (2)
little kids
little kids 4
little kids 5
little kids 6
little kids 7
little kids 8
I’m hoping to be able to digitize a few more photos when I’m back in Ohio later this year, there are so many and it’s always more convenient to have them on the computer. Not only that, they’re backed up several places for safe keeping!

Have you taken steps to preserve some of your old family photos?

Last weekend, I was in upstate NY trying to make progress in cleaning out my Dad’s house. There are so many photos taken over 67+ years that I don’t want to toss. Perhaps digitization is my solution.

At it’s simplest you can set up an area with good diffused lighting and take photos of the old photos with your camera. I have done this before and you end up with better files than you can get from scanning, it’s also way faster. You just have to find the right place with the right light so you don’t get glare.

Great advice, thanks! I have boxes and boxes of old photos that I was planning to scan. But I’m much more proficient with the camera than the scanner, so I’ll do that instead.

I love the handmade clothing in your pictures. Also love the hat on Sr. Cobayo.

It really is so much faster, finding good, diffused light is the key!

Too cute! I would like to do this someday with my grandma’s and my mom’s photos. There are also a few old video tapes that need transferred (do you recommend a company?). But, my favorite thing that I want to find a way to preserve are these old cassette tapes my great grandma used to record during Christmas and my cousin and I were so little and you hear us the whole time. They are so old and fragile I am afraid to play them.

My mom is digitizing a lot of the really old family photos (great great grandparents, etc.). I’m so glad that she’s doing it, but I should try to talk her into doing ones from our childhood too.

Something about the fourth slide above, of you and your brother and sister all dressed up, and you with your bare feet, shows a bit of the ‘future Susy’. Love it!

Susy, it’s so much fun to look back and remember our childhood, isn’t it. Well, most of the time it is. It brings back many wonderful memories for me. My mother didn’t keep a journal per se but instead took pictures of every thing. Then she gravitated to carousel slide shows when they became popular. Each year of her camera life has a big thick album dedicated to that year. My sister is the keeper of those albums and they reside in her house. They take up a big bookcase just for them. Unfortuntely, Mom is not in many of the pictures because she was always taking the pictures. When I visit my sister, the bookcase is in the spare bedroom so I get a chance to page through a couple each night before going to sleep. I think Mom’s first camera was one of those old black box Brownie cameras. She would be absolutely ecstatic with the digital world of today were she still alive.

We don’t get to see your bright and shining face in your blog posts much but I noticed the cute dimples and wonder if they still show up when you smile or laugh. Those were great pictures. From all the laughing pictures, you must have really enjoyed your childhood.

    Have a great reminiscent day.

I do still have dimples, and you’re right, I rarely am in front of the camera :)
