Warm & Cozy

November 16th, 2013

I finished up my scarf yesterday morning, it’s just what I wanted. The scarf is long, and it will be joined into a large circle to become an infinity scarf. It’s an idea that appeals to me because I hate it when my scarf blows around, this way I won’t have any loose ends. This will also make it super warm, I’ll be able to wrap it around my neck twice.

I’m going to join the two sides with buttons, then I can wear it as a regular scarf if I want. If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know I LOVE buttons. I’m lucky enough to have received both of my grandmother’s button collections as well as my great aunts. After opening up my grandmother’s jar I found these two beauties inside.

These may be the ones that grace my scarf, or I may cut small discs from a birch branch to make birch buttons. But I rather like the little piece of history that these carry.

Are you a scarf wearer, or do you prefer other methods to keep your neck warm?

I wear scarfs and typically knit my own.

Scarfs make me feel as if I’m being choked, so I avoid them when possible. So do turtlenecks, but I wear them anyway because there is no way I can wear a wool sweater without something to keep the wool off my neck. I’d rather be choked than scratch my skin bloody because of itchy wool, I guess.

I’m with you on the turtleneck, can’t wear them. Scarves used to bother me too, they have to be loose enough to not be choking.

I never used to be a scarf person at all. Then I started making infinity scarves and I love them. I wish I knew how to knit and crochet to make more scarves, but all of mine are sewn. Your scarf is beautiful! I love the idea of using the buttons from your grandma’s collection.

I’m a definite scarf wearer. In fact the first thing I learned to knit were scarves and I spent several months doing just that while recuperating from an illness several years ago. I almost always wear a scarf in winter, even just around the house. I love the idea of using those buttons you showed us. They are lovely and have such wonderful sentiment with them.

Susy, no scarves here. I do have fond memories of buttons. My grandmother had a jar filled with buttons. All the grand kids got to play with the jar of buttons when we came to visit. I’m not sure why it was such a fascination but it was. No one knows what happened to that jar of buttons when Grandma died.

Personally, I’m really not a fan of buttons. Zippers are good or just pull over shirts. I used to not like sweaters in my youth but now in my old age it warms the bones and …. no buttons.

Have a great button up day.

You finished it! It looks great! I love the button idea, too.

I do like to both make and wear scarves. A scarf is a great way to add a splash of color. I wear mine doubled, or pulled through a loop, to keep them from flapping and blowing away. I can’t wear coarse wool around my neck, but softer wools are fine. And I can’t wear turtlenecks either, it’s totally psychological.

I just finished crocheting a scarf last evening and have been thinking about putting buttons on it like you are planning. I love the idea of the birch buttons. My husband has a portable sawmill and access to lots of wood, ( many scraps) and I may have to ask him to make me some buttons! What an awesome idea! Thanks for the idea.

Always have a scarf….I have found if I keep my neck warm I am warmer all over and for some reason healthier. A dear older friend of mine made a sort of wool collar with buttons for me that fits nicely under my sweaters…but does not have all the bulk of a scarf….I am pretty partial to this and it sees a lot of action in the winter.

Amy, I would love to see a picture of the wool collar! Seems like something that would be very useful…

Love that color. I do not wear scarves. It’s never usually cold enough here in Bakersfield, California.

Yes, scarves. And yes, mock turtlenecks but not the old fashioned chokey kind. I live in Alaska so much of the year it’s about staying warm. I also think scarves are a great way to dress up a minimalist wardrobe.
Yours looks great and I love the old buttons!

We did it together. I finished mine this morning. I am sending it to NYC to a very dear person. Here in Grenada, no need for scarves. When I lived in the temperate zone, I always used a scarf. I also love to knit or crochet them. During the spring and when I lived in SC I made a bunch of skinny, long scarves. I sometimes used them to wrap my locks. I made the skinny ones in cotton and 3 inches wide.
Your scarf is beautiful, one of my favorite colors.

Only time I’ll wear a scarf is in a blizzard, same with hats. hate both of them, but have crocheted many to give away to the less fortunate. No turtlenecks either, too strangly. I did buy at auction my 1 grandmother’s buttons, althogh she did very little sewing ever. My mom has her mother’s and I hope someday to get them. Maybe my sis won’t want them. Love old buttons, have some very old ones. Your scarf is very pretty.
