Friday Favorite: Curling
This Friday Favorite is for Mr Chiots. Many years ago he started watching curling during the winter Olympics, then he was hooked. He wanted so badly to learn how to play, but the only club near us in Ohio was over an hour and a half away. Lucky for us, the only curling club in Maine is only about 20 minutes from our house. Last year we went to a Learn to Curl event at the club and Mr Chiots couldn’t wait to sign up for leagues.
This year he’s curling two nights a week and loving it. I haven’t been able to get to one of his matches yet since it’s been a bit busy around here, once things settle down in December I will. One thing is for sure, Mr Chiots is in seventh heaven!
Is there any strange sport you’ve always wanted to try your hand at?

We have a curling club in the next town over. My husband thinks it looks fun. I took up winter hiking which 5 years ago I didn’t even know existed. I was surprised to find that we were not alone in the woods when we venture out in deep snow on back woods trails. Winter sports and activities are the best! Now I don’t dread the long New England winters.

So true, we love hiking and snowshoeing in the winter, we actually have a little more leisure time since there’s no garden work, so we love getting outside on a sunny winter day!

I used to drive by the Belfast Curling Club and think, I’m almost to Belfast. Now when I drive by, I think of the Chiots. Just a little connection.

I am so not a sports person, but we like to find sports that are not really mainstream. So my son does fencing. He loves it and I love going to the matches to watch him.

Cross-country skiing. My in-laws used to live in Colorado and we’d visit in the winters, and I’d see the skiers using the golf course and think “How do you ski on flat land??? Maybe I could do that, without the fear of hurtling downhill and crashing into a tree!” So one trip, we tried it. It’s a lot less dangerous (in my mind, anyway) than downhill skiing, but a lot of work. I was exhausted after our first foray, and haven’t done it since. But! When I fell down, I didn’t fall far. :)

Susy, my doing a sport days are long over unless you call tobogganing down the school house hill a sport. I think perhaps this year I may have retired even from that sport. I did play high school football and College football is the most watched sport in Nebraska with the College World Series a close second. I’m not a died in the wool sports fan but I do like to watch a good game especially if our team wins. :-).
Brian, good luck in all your curling endeavors. It’s so neat to hear and watch you follow your passions.
Have a great curling day.

my goodness and here I thought only my husband was so enamored with this sport. I don’t get it but he loves watching it and says he would love to try his hand at it for sure. Being at the beach I am pretty sure it is not a sport we have here but someday we may be living in New England so you never know.

You never know Nancy. They are getting close to having clubs in all 50 states. http://www.teamusa.org/USA-Curling/Clubs/Find-a-Club

My husband LOVES curling! He was on a team when we lived in MN with a wonderful man who was in his late 80’s at the time. He played with (against?) the 2006 Olympic bronze medalist from the next town over :) and had his broom signed by the 1976 World Champion team (from my hometown). What a fun sport, to play and watch. I miss going to Bonspiels, but there are no curling clubs near where we live now. Perhaps that will be on the ‘must have’ list the next move we make!
Despite curling being a big sport where I grew up, I never did take it up. I do like Nordic skiing, and one year I made my own snowshoes for hiking through the woods–I’m a bit of an introvert and like my quiet time :)

Gino curled with the Belfast club for a couple of years and really loved it. It got harder travel and timing-wise once we moved to Hope, so he hasn’t resumed. I always called it “chess on ice”. The scoring is weird and I could never quite understand it. My favorite part was the beer drinking at the end of the game (or the scotch drinking with the “Piping In” at the beginning). For me I would prefer skiing… but that’s a whole other category. All in all a great winter sport. Lots of great tradition and friendship.

Lots of curling going on up here in Canada. Funny enough about the strange sports comment. My wife took me to friday night curling for one of our first dates. Strange sport combined with a strange suggestion…

I have been fascinated by curling since I saw it in the Olympics – I am so jealous that your hubby gets to learn how to play – I think that would be so much fun!!!
