Beautiful – but Painful

December 24th, 2013

The ice storm continued all day yesterday, we lost power for a few hours in the afternoon but it came back on. I still have a “lights out” blog post scheduled for tomorrow in case they go out again and I can’t get on-line. Ice storms are beautiful, but they’re a mess. We have enough ice that trees are dropping branches left and right. When you go outside the sound of branches and trees coming down is constant. Lucky for us, there aren’t any trees close enough to drop branches on the house. The chicken coop barely escaped a big white pine branch.

It should be interesting to get out a little today to see how much damage has been done. We won’t be able to go into the wood until all the ice melts and we’re hoping our driveway melts soon.

Anyone else dealing with ice and power outages from this storm?

    Yikes. That’s a mess, indeed.

We just had really freakish warmth and rain, which made a muddy mess, but not dangerous. We’re leaving tomorrow for Arizona and we totally lucked out with the weather: cold but totally clear from our departure city, then non-stop to Phoenix. In Arizona, it’s going to be around 70 and nothing but sun for the ten days we’re there. Bonus.

Merry Christmas to you and your crew, Susy.

Here on MDI, the build up of ice has caused power outages. I was out for 13 hours which really isn’t bad. I went to Ellsworth yesterday and it was reminiscent of Ice Storm 98. Birch saplings were bent over into the roadways and other trees were losing branches. At least one set of traffic lights was out. Rather than shopping and risking getting stuck there, I came back to the Island at noon and restored power. At least there weren’t high winds associated with this storm or we’d be in bigger trouble.

Susy, Our claim to storm fame here is cold. No ice, snow predicated later today but nothing big. The temp right now is 2 degrees with wind chill -20. It looks to be a brutally cold Christmas with just enough snow to make it white. I’m hoping your partially cloudy sunshine will begin the melting process. Four wheel chains for the jeep would be nice to navigate on icy roads.

Have a great ice melting day.

We have cold here in Minnesota; we just missed all the mess from the super storm. Air temperature was 15 BELOW when I woke up this morning. We will have snow today which sounds perfect…light, fluffy flakes just in time for Christmas.

Happy holidays to you two and the beasts!

What about your outside dog? Did she have any shelter through this?

She was in the basement and still is. It’s super slippery out there and there are loads of tree branches coming down so we kept her indoors to keep her safe!

Good idea while natures pruning service is at work.

I wish. Warm BBQ weather slated for tomorrow. Tragically dry here. Enjoy winter.
