Cultivate Simple 59: New Goals for the New Year

December 30th, 2013

Today on the show we discuss our process for setting goals and achieving them. Here are some tips we discuss on the show:

  • Be realistic, but don’t be afraid to dream, just be able to put goals on the back burner
  • Break a task down into manageable pieces.
  • Figure out what you’re going to have to invest to reach your goal in time and money
  • Set a deadline
  • Map your progress (make a list and check items off)
  • Celebrate success or failure

Happy New Year to both of you! Another great show (and you thought you were running out of ideas :) )

Lately my thoughts have been on this week’s topic, so seizing on your inspiration I wrote down some concrete plans, breaking down bigger goals into smaller ones. On my general list are: following through on a small business idea, the 2014 garden, parenting/family life, and food/cooking.

I haven’t been able to stop by and comment much during the holiday season, but I also wanted to add that the Saving Time in the Kitchen episode from a couple of weeks ago was fantastic, and I will definitely be listening to it again!

I used to do the ‘word’ of the year thing, but this year I barely focused on it. I’m abandoning it this year. I have some goals I want to accomplish this year and will be focusing on them instead.

I finished listening to last week’s episode and you were talking about generators. We had a small one in FL that we used to keep the fridge running, but MOSTLY to keep my husband’s 180 gallon saltwater reef tank alive! It worked well, we would stock up on gas before hand, and never ran out.

The bad thing about power outages—-no one remembers traffic rules of blinking red lights. We were rear ended on a curve after Wilma. Very frustrating.

That’s because people don’t know what to do at a 4-way stop. I swear common sense is gone.

i remember back in Ohio, you planted a TON of perennial bulbs one year. Where did you get those? Locally? or online? I am having a hard time finding any bulbs online so I thought I’d ask you :) I want to do something similar to what you did. It was SO beautiful!

Thanks for this podcast. At the start of a new year I often think about and sometimes even write down goals for the new year. However, the follow through seems to be where I get stuck. I appreciated your thoughts on the process of step by step goal setting.

We have a few goals for 2014. One is to declutter and organize the shop and greenhouse. Right now this seems overwhelming, but if we take some of your suggestions, it is attainable.

Other goals, learning to make good soup, finding a small business
for myself, tweaking our personal financial budget, redesigning our
vegetable garden and possibly look into raising bees. I like your goal of a hoop house, but that one may need to wait a year.

Thanks to both of you for a wonderful year of podcasts. Happy New Year.

My husband and I just bought our first home in November, so we have LOTS of goals for this year – get a dog, get the gardens set up, bees, chickens, pay off debt….and get more handy! We have a snowblower that needs to repair….we are currently about 6 inches into potential 15-20 inches!

I really appreciate all the inspiration you provide my husband and I. Thanks for all the time you put into the blog and podcast.

Check out this channel on YouTube. Lots of great videos on fixing your own small engines… if you want to take a crack at it.
