Citrus Season

January 4th, 2014

It’s citrus season here at Chiot’s Run. Since it’s is season in more temperate regions, we order up boxes of various kinds of citrus to brighten up our days. Right now I’m enjoying Rio Red grapefruit from G & S Groves in TX. Grapefruit is my all time favorite kind of citrus to eat. I also got a box of Valencia oranges for Mr Chiots, which is his favorite.

I’m also working on a box of Meyer lemons from Lemon Ladies Orchard (we’ll be doing a giveaway in a few little bit). Earlier this week I made a batch of lemon curd and it’s AMAZING.

Of course with all the citrus I’m making gallons of my citrus infused vinegar to get me through the cleaning year (see my post about it here).

There’s something so happy about citrus, I LOVE it. Perhaps it’s my tropical roots, or maybe it’s just because it really does brighten up a cold winter day!

What’s your favorite kind of citrus?

Good citrus is very hard to come by, so I am going to check out where you buy yours. Thanks for the link.

I ordered some to be delivered to my daughter’s house at Christmas from a local green house specialty shop. They get it from Florida. The problem I find with getting it shipped is the super high delivery costs. Will have to check out your source and see if it’s better. I would love to get some more.

I really do like all citrus. It is hard to pick one out from the rest.
Just a tip to share: wash citrus before using. My husband;s uncle got e coli from unwashed citrus. More than likely from lemon in water. I honestly never thought of that. Anyone else? Or am I alone?

    Good morning Susy,

Wondering how you find these small farms. I’ve been wanting to order oranges for a long time, and am having difficulty finding places to order from. Lemon Ladies is absolute adorable. Just the kind of place we should love to support.

    Thanks for the links.

Susy, my favorite kind of fruit would have to be apple. Ok, is that citrus? The next fruit would be an orange. I’m pretty sure that would be citrus.

    Have a great citrus day.

You’re such a great advocate for these farms! I have unfortunately used up my 10 pound box of lemons but am working on the grapefruit and oranges now. I did make a lemon curd that was UNBELIEVABLE. Also made a lemon lavender fig marmalade which I have been putting in my oatmeal. With grapefruit I made a citrus peel marmalade and mostly just eating them. How delish! I was honestly worried about the texas box coming after that extreme cold spell in December and didn’t know if I’d get it. I am considering another order with Lemon Ladies if they still have some left.

Those look so yummy! I love oranges and grapefruit, but also kumquats. The combination of sweet, sour, and bitter all in one little bite-sized bundle is just so great! I’m the only one in my family that likes them though, so I only buy them when I can find them loose in the grocery store and buy just a few.

Grapefruit, oranges, lemons, not sure I have a favorite. There is something about citrus this time of year, like you wrote, it does brighten up a cold winter day.

Perfect timing for this post, I had some orange peels sitting on the counter and was looking up your recipe for infused vinegar.

Any kind of citrus really, for different uses but probably grapefruit and satsumas for eating and lemons and oranges for cooking, baking and cleaning! Would love if you shared your recipe for lemon curd and how you use it! :)

I used the Ina Garten recipe you recommended for lemon curd the other day, and it turned out great. I’ve always made lemon curd where you add the butter at the end, but this was smoother and more flavorful. Thanks for the tip!

I love Orchard Ladies lemons! I just started ordering from them and they make me so happy. I’m waiting for a box right now. We live in Minnesota now, but my grandmother had a Meyer lemon tree in her yard when I was growing up in Northern California.
For Christmas I gave a few friends 2 or 3 lemons in a wide mouth 1.5 pint mason jar, and some homemade pepper jelly and rosemary cashews. I really enjoyed your simplify the holidays episode. I also have made lemon salt for a few gifts which is awesome for roast chicken etc.
