The Daily Walk

January 22nd, 2014

Lately, I’ve been taking The Brown Chiots on a morning walk. We head down the driveway and then we come back up again, nothing too exciting, but it gives us a cleared place to walk. We have a longer driveway, around 1/3 of a mile in length. It’s downhill all the way down and uphill all the way back. This is the perfect walk for Lucy, especially the uphill part. It helps keep her old joints a little less stiff.

When we’re proactive about taking her on a short walk every day she definitely gets around much better.  Not to mention, she simply loves to be out and about. I also must say, it’s good for me as well!  Having her around makes me get out and walk, I probably wouldn’t be doing this in the morning if it weren’t for her.  It’s nice to breathe the crisp morning air, look for animals tracks through the woods and to watch the birds about their work.  I’d get physical exercise even if it wasn’t for this walk, but this walk is good for more than just my body!

Do you have a daily activity that’s physical to help keep you active?

Susy, winter time is bad for my exercise. I should get to the YMCA for exercise in the winter but I don’t. Most of the time just projects are my exercise and in most cases that’s enough. This year …. not so much. It will be a tough spring tweaking up those muscles for outside projects. Well, and surgery curtails exercising too much. It’s amazing how fast my muscles with lose their strength if daily exercise isn’t part of the schedule. Hopefully, I’ll get back to working on cleaning out the basement this week. It’s really been a busy schedule for helping others this month.

One of the things I like the most about winter is the crisp air on a cold morning. Hearing the snow crunch under the boots and the quiet sounds that drift over the landscape just calms the spirit. It’s just not the same in the city with the low level noise drone in the background. You truly are living the dream.

    Have a great morning walk.

I do yoga and either walk or ride my bike every day. Fortunately, yoga lends itself well to the indoors when the weather doesn’t permit time outside.
    Enjoy your strolls.

I do a dance exercise class (Jazzercise) 4-5 days a week. I like that it gives me aerobic exercise as well as weights and resistance training. I started going in April and I find I’m a lot more flexible and strong, and my endurance is way up. With my sedentary lifestyle (so much time spent either on a weaving bench or in a spinning chair) it’s good to get my heart pumping strongly for at least that one hour a day (and hopefully that’ll keep it pumping 24 hours a day for many years to come!) On the weekends I take the husband for a walk in the park that’s a half-mile walk from our house. It has a 2-mile walking trail around a wetlands bird refuge, so there are lots of waterfowl and squirrels and rabbits and turtles to see, as well as the chickens that people have dumped in the park (Easter chicks, no doubt).

It should be illegal to sell animals based on holidays. Too many people simply into the esthetics of babies and not into the responsibility of a mature animal. When no longer cute, out they go to starve or freeze and die. Then those same people declare it cruel and inhumaine to raise animals for food. The hypocrisy is simply maddening.

My dog definitely gets me out walking every day, which really helps me stay acclimated to winter here in Wisconsin. In the mornings, I have a bit of a hike to catch an express bus to work, but I have found that early morning walk really loosens me up, and I love the quiet and animal tracks in the snow too.

I’m on outdoor lunchtime supervision at my school, as well as bus duty morning and afternoon. It guarantees me at least 90 minutes outside everyday. I find that I get a headache when I spend a whole day inside.

I walk my dogs daily and also ride my horse 5 days a week…I spend more time out then in whatever the season. Could explain why the house always looks like its in need of a domestic blitz!
