Friday Favorite: Herbal Steam

January 31st, 2014

There’s nothing I love more than breathing herbal steam when my sinuses are feeling the pressure. If I have fresh herbs I’ll use those, if not essential oils. My favorite scents are: eucalyptus and peppermint, sometimes I’ll add rosemary and a drop or two of thyme oil as well. Nothing clears up my sinus pressure like breathing steam!
Steam
I became a believe in herbal steam a long time ago when I had antibiotic resistant pneumonia. After a few rounds of antibiotics my pneumonia just wouldn’t clear up. I started breathing herbal steam with: oregano, peppermint, thyme, rosemary and eucalyptus every couple hours and within a week I was almost back to normal.

Do you ever use herbal remedies?

Not so much herbal but when my throat gets scratchy I drink this combo.

1tablespoon apple cider vinegar (preferably unfiltered)
    1tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (not the stuff in the jar)

It really works and doesn’t taste bad at all!

Susy, so much of the medicine in our culture is less effective now than when doctors started using it. Natural remedies never seem to lose their effectiveness. When all else fails, we go back to nature for our cures. Health has become big business in our culture. In my humble opinion, health starts right in my own kitchen and is something that’s encouraged or discouraged on a daily basis. I am far from totally encouraging healthful things in the kitchen but I’m allot better than I was a couple years ago. I’ve always kind of dabbled in the natural remedy realm but never with any consistency. We are such an instant society that unless something works the same day or the next, it’s considered something that doesn’t work. How sad is that? With the advent and increase of Internet knowledge natural remedies are easier to find. We have come full circle to what our grandparents and great grandparents already knew.

Have a great natural remedy day.

Suzy, try chamomile steam. It has antibiotic properties too.

I’d love to try this for my constant congestion. It would be nice to be able to breath at night! Maybe I’ll use peppermint tea bags, as I don’t have any mint in the house. Thanks for the idea!

Why have I never thought of this? Thank you for sharing this. I have allergies and always feel stopped up. I will be trying this very, very soon.
