Promises of Things to Come

May 15th, 2014

While out planting onions yesterday I noticed that my overbearing strawberries are starting to bloom.

I noticed that one of them was even starting to produce a small strawberry.

Mr Chiots is going to be super excited, I think strawberry season is one of his favorite seasons of the year!

Which fruit do you look forward to most?

Honeydue melon are my ultimate weakness. I’m an addict!

Tried growing my own and they get to the size of my fist or a bit bigger and. Just. Die. So sad.

Then the squirrels come and peck at them.

We are growing strawberries for the first time this year. The choices were a bit overwhelming but I ultimately decided on Cavendish. It’s going to be very, very difficult for me to pinch off all the flower buds this year! I keep telling myself that gardening is a lesson in patience.

Susy, any kind of berry would be my favorite fruit. Well, except for gooseberry. I’m not real fond of that one. I don’t have any berries planted in my garden yet but maybe next year. I’m still waiting for the official declaration from the EPA as to whether they are replacing the soil at Terra Nova Gardens or not. I have seen evidence that they took samples. Little holes all over the garden mulch. So Maybe I’ll hear something soon. I’m just not too enthused about planting until I get the official word back from the EPA.

Have a great fruit berry in the garden day.

I certainly hope the EPA comes back with good news for you. They’re certainly taking their own sweet time doing so though.

I admit I don’t do well with choices, so I would have to go with the elusive everyberry. Or perhaps the equally elusive allberry. Let’s just say ‘berry’ and I’ll eat whateverberry is in front of me!

This year I’ve planted black raspberries (from a friend) and will be planting reds in the back. I’m hoping to plant some strawberries, but it’s getting a little late in the season. Highbush blueberry are also on the to-do list. It’s shaping up to be a busy spring!

And our strawberry season seems to be just ending. I do have blackberries though, green but big, hopefully they’ll ripen soon and the squirrels will leave me some.

I love cherry season – sweet cherries to eat by the handful and then pie cherries to get us through the winter. Pie cherry jam is my favorite (although mixed berry jam with maple syrup is a new favorite)!

I love the sweet cherries that arrive in the store just before July 4th. I think they grow in Washington.

In the future I hope to have a bunch of different berries growing on my property. For now I’ll stick with the raspberry bushes that “came with the house.”

I love strawberries, but the grocery store ones are never good. Grapes are a favorite of mine, as are cherries. Blueberries are my fav for baking (muffins mmm…) I love pretty much all fruit.

My goal for 2015 or 2016 will be to get a space picked out and plant blueberry bushes. But I also want to grow grapes along my fence.

Fresh figs are what I look forward to the most.. My Hardy Chicago Fig took a beating this winter but its still growing strong… it didnt completely die back to the ground but it sure took quite a bit of it… Oh well.. hopefully, it’ll give me luscious figs again this year…
I’ve also got strawberries & blueberries doing great this year! Looking forward to them too!
