Quote of the Day: Jim Goodwin

June 8th, 2014

The time to relax is when you don’t have time for it.

~Attributed to both Jim Goodwin and Sydney J. Harris
relaxing
Even when there are a thousand things to do in the garden, I try take a minute to pull out my lawn chair and sit in the garden each day. Sometimes I need to remind myself that it’s not a race, it’s a journey and I need to make sure I enjoy it!

Do have a spot where you can sit and enjoy your garden?

I garden, knit/crochet, read, meditate in no particular spot, whenever the spirit moves me. Sometimes just sitting on a dried spot with my back against a bay leaf tree—- enjoying the garden.

Susy, such a wise person you are. I spent most of my career life controlled by a daily schedule and ToDo lists. When the day was done I fell into bed exhausted hoping to get enough sleep to be able to do it over again the next day. Is it any wonder that a high percentage of people don’t sleep well; have trouble with anxiety; and are medicated with anti depression medicine.

Today, I still have a schedule and a ToDo list and fall into bed tired but if it doesn’t get done, well, there’s always tomorrow or the next day, or next week, or next year. I hardly think that when folks are on their death bed that the concern is that the ToDo list didn’t get completed. I’ve learned to work some and rest some to admire the work accomplished. Things are just a mess in the garden this year with late frost required replanting and now with destruction from the hail storm this week, gardening will be at a minimum. I’ll have to frequent the Farmer’s markets more this year. It’s a total loss but the good side is that now I can concentrate on the garden structure that never seems to get done. So finishing a fence; developing a spring for irrigation; and planning an irrigation system for Terra Nova Gardens will be on the schedule and ToDo list.

Have a great relaxing when there’s no time to relax day.

We have a garden chair in the middle of the garden, just for…relaxing. The placement is perfect to view the garden, chickens and surrounding mountains. However, I’m not too good at taking time to stop. Thanks for the reminder, Susy, its important to pause.

And who better to remind us of this than cats.

I love salad season.  After a long winter of eating lots of root vegetables, salads really make my palate happy....
