Quote of the Day: Voltaire

July 13th, 2014

“Nothing would be more tiresome than eating and drinking if God had not made them a pleasure as well as a necessity.”

Mr Chiots and are enjoying the restaurant food in Maine. Back in Ohio there were a few restaurants we went to, but they were all over an hour away, which isn’t very convenient. Here we have a host of local food restaurants with delicious food. Earlier this week we went to Salt Water Farm in Rockport and it was delicious. Mr Chiots enjoyed their burger and I got clams. We also enjoyed a nice appetizer along with dessert and coffee. We feel extremely lucky to have so many delicious places within a half hour, of course that means the eating out portion of our budget has grown.

Do you have a favorite non-chain restaurant in your area?

Susy, Nebraska and Iowa are filled with Mom and Pop cafes in the small towns. I don’t have a favorite one they all portray a rural culture that still lives outside of the big city. Heavy mugs of steaming coffee come with country breakfasts that city folks would cringe over because all the terrible things that would clog your veins. Many decades ago my grand parents had one of these cafes in a small town of about 300. For years they were the focal point of the town. My parents and I lived on what would be called a homestead today of 80 acres until I was about 8. Those were the years of the beginning of rock and roll. Grandpa always gave me a couple quarters to play the Jukebox. Back then a quarter got you three songs. When ever I get a chance, I eat at a small town café and think of those years. Some times you don’t know that you’re living the best years of your life until they are long gone. Those were special years for sure.

Have a great non-chain restaurant day.

My favorite non-chain restaurant in my area is ‘my kitchen’. I live a ‘vegan lifestyle’. Unfortunately that thinking has not reached Grenada yet. As a result we cook at home and enjoy ourselves.

I rarely eat out but my favorite breakfast spot is Cafe This Way in Bar Harbor. They serve an excellent dinner too. I also love McKays and Side Street Cafe in Bar Harbor.
When I eat out, I want something I wouldn’t cook at home and I want it to be of the highest quality ingredients locally sourced. I’m not impressed with the places who get a lot of premade, chowder and desserts for example, off the Sysco truck. I’m willing to pay more for quality.
