Quote of the Day: Laura Ingalls Wilder

July 20th, 2014

“I am beginning to learn that it is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all.”

Coffee, cats, my sweetie, sunrises, camping, flowers, good food, and reading – these are a few of the simple things I enjoy.

What simple things in life do you enjoy most?

I enjoy a cup of good coffee in the AM, often along with a newspaper or book.

I love to read in the afternoons if I have time, it’s like a stolen few moments of happiness.

I love cool, crisp mornings and evenings to sit outside and watch around me and plan.

Really, with these moments in my life, I am very content.

Sitting by a creek, listening to water music.

Sipping coffee in a quiet house, watching the sunrise.

Spinning wool on my wheel, feeling the fiber with my hands, making yarn for weaving or knitting later – when I get to feel it again.

Seeing my sweetheart’s face light up when he’s problem-solving and suddenly hits on the answer.

Scritching under the chin of a cat in my lap, feeling/listening to the purring.

Susy, what’s your favorite Laura Ingalls Wilder book? I’ve never read them (I know!) and I’d like to dip in and try, because so many of the people I admire are fans of her writing.

I’d start with the Little House on the Prairie series. Little House in the Big Woods is the first in that series and you’ll LOVE it. They are a quick read and it shouldn’t take long to get through the entire series. I read the bindings off my copies when I was a girl and bought a really nice bound set a few years ago. Reading them as an adult brings out more of the deeper meanings in her writings. I also love that you notice that the books deepen in thought and emotion as Laura grows older during the course of the books.

Quiet. Hard to come by with kids around. Also, eating lunch by myself while reading a book is a treasured time that I plan for all morning.

Susy, enjoy those moments and times of sweet simple things of life as much as you can. Years slip by quickly. The picture of you and Brian together is awesome. My trips are usually goal oriented. Weddings, graduations, etc. are what gets me out of the garden and on a trip. I’m not much for just meandering across the country on a vacation of sight seeing. Unless there’s a good project or event on the other end, it just doesn’t interest me.

The simple things of life are coffee in the morning, reading blogs from Internet friends, letters from penpals, garden projects, other people’s projects, and reading garden oriented magazines. It’s a great life just sitting at the picnic table at Terra Nova Gardens under the shade of the cottonwood tree and watching small birds, wild turkeys, and feral cats roam the land in search of their next meal. Yesterday much to my surprise, two wild hen turkeys came within 20 feet of me on their journey across my garden with a following of nine poults. The babies were about the size of a full grown doves. I wish I could have gotten a picture but my camera was in the truck and I didn’t want to scare them away. For five minutes I watched the action of the small turkeys drinking from my spring and then wandering on to look for bugs and such to eat. It’s the first time since I’ve been gardening Terra Nova Gardens that I’ve seen the baby turkeys. Those mama hens weren’t really afraid of me but they did keep a sharp eye on me as their little ones drank their fill. Terra Nova Gardens is my simple sanctuary in the middle of the city.

Have a great simple things of life day.

If I had to pare my day down to the essential elements, taking out the parts required to pay for said essential elements, it would look like this:

Coffee, reading, gardening, eating, drinking, knitting, taking care of my animals and taking care of my friends.
