Weekly Harvest

July 22nd, 2014

This week I’m harvesting so many tasty things from the garden. I’ve been plucking a few new ‘Purple Majesty’ potatoes from under each plant to pair with large purple beets. My shallots and garlic have sized up nicely and I have a flush of ‘Jade’ beans from my first planting.

We’ve been enjoying meatless meals comprised of a wide variety of freshly harvested vegetables topped with butter and fresh herbs.  The bounty of the July garden is always overwhelming, I often forget just how many wonderful things are ready to harvest during the summer.  There are endless possibilities for quick, healthy meals comprised of things plucked fresh from the garden.

What’s in your harvest basket this week?

Susy, Wow, you are in garden harvest heaven, aren’t you. The harvest this week here may be some tomatoes that finally decided to ripen and cabbage for the kraut. I’ve never made kraut but from the instruction class during at the Mother Earth News fair last fall, it’s pretty easy. I’m reusing glass gallon pickle jars left over from Bradley’s dill pickles. I have many but only have five cabbages. Salt is used to draw the liquid out of the cabbage. I don’t think it really matters what kind of salt is used. No one in the family will most likely eat it except me so I don’t need allot.

    Have a bountiful harvest day.

Harvest—I feel like abandoning my garden at the moment since it feels like a sauna here. Between the tomatoes being done and the bleeping squash vine borers…not much is going on. Figs are about all I’m harvesting at the moment.

I feel your pain, Misti – the squash vine borers have conquered all my zucchini and squash too. We replanted, but they just attacked the young plants as well. I think that’s going to be a crop that I get at the farmer’s market from now on, it’s just not worth the time and effort to try to grow them organically in my yard. And our tomatoes have quit too – it’s too hot. We’re still getting eggplant, okra, and a handful of beans.

Me three. Tomatoes are done, third attempt at squash destroyed. Even the butternut.

Things are really picking up here–tomatoes are SOOOO slow but we’ve had a couple, but–we have cucumbers, broccoli/cauliflower, kale, zucchini, onions and garlic. Totally getting psyched to eat almost completely from the backyard for the next few weeks! I need to make a list of all our favorite summer meals so we don’t forget one, ha!

Last night we had dinner mostly from the garden – zucchini, onion and an anaheim pepper sauteed, topped with melted cheese and served over baked potato (store bought) with a side of applesauce (from the freezer). We are still waiting on our first bush beans and tomatoes. Cucumbers will be in my harvest next week for sure!

salad greens, jalapeno peppers, malabar spinach, ginger, plantain and lots and lots of mangoes. Into that mix am listening to Scott Joplin. Enough rain to make my plants happy and full my rain barrels.

It’s been a crazy year here in CT. No tomatoes so far, very few peppers, rose chaffers eating all the leaves. Lots of kale and collards. A few zucchini but no squash bugs, thankfully. Very little swiss chard. Picked the garlic planted last fall, that turned out nice. Waiting patiently for the bush beans. No heads on the cauliflower for some reason. Can you eat the outer leaves? It’s amazing how the garden can differ from year to year.
