One More Chicken

July 29th, 2014

I’ve been collecting little statues to hide around the garden for quite a while. I have a few cats, a face and now I just got this sweet little chicken.

I simply love it and am actually thinking it might be perfect atop a large trellis. The best part about this chicken is that it requires no feed. There’s definite value in having art in your garden, whether it be a small statue, or something else. There’s a winery nearby that has wonderful wind powered art and I’d love to add one to my garden someday. I’ll have to try to get photos of it next time I’m in town. I’d also love to find a few pieces made by local potters, there’s always room to tuck in a special piece somewhere.

Do you have any statues in your garden? What kind of garden art do you like most?

I have stepping stones that my kids made for me and I also have a stepping stone that I made. In my side garden, one day a little ceramic Jesus statue appeared (we really don’t know were he came from at all), so he just hangs out by the lilies.

I really want a garden gnome though. I keep searching and searching for the perfect one….

Susy, as of yet there’s very little art in the garden. I do find little super hero action figures from Bradley’s outside play and put them in key places around the poor man’s living patio and other flower bed places. Sooner or later Bradley with notice them and remove them for me to find in the yard again. I have a windmill donated from my mother in law when she move from her rented house to her rented apartment. Yeah, I got a lot of donations from her when she moved that she determined I needed and will have to responsible for until she’s gone.

I do have intensions of making a scarecrow family for Terra Nova Gardens but haven’t done that yet. This year it was just too busy staying ahead of the weeds and grass. I would like to have a Mom, Dad, and child. I don’t think it would really scare any critters away but just be for decoration. I’m just not too artsy.

Have a great garden art day.

That chicken is darlin! I have a few little fairies, gnomes, wire dragon fly… people have given me and I enjoy placing them so they surprise those same friends when they visit.
Adelina- the stepping stones are such a nice gift! We wanted to make some…but like Nebraska Dave we kept getting busy this season.
Maybe in the garage this winter???

I have several statuary squirrels that peak out from behind plants. I have some “words in stone” that I made that say “Joy”, “Peace”, and “Abundance”. My favorite is simply a small stone head, wide and squat with a goofy look on his face. He sits in front of some creeping thyme so it often looks like his has a head full of spiral, lavender locks.

Several weeks ago we went camping for the weekend. When we returned we found that my vegetable garden had been “decorated” with hideous ceramic vases, statues, a lamp, salt & pepper shakers, even a grotesque elephant planter with GI Joe riding him. Long story, but unfortunately many of these “lovely” items are ones we have hidden in our friends’ home over the years, so I guess we had it coming!

One of the pros about having garden art vs. indoor collectibles is that one does not have to dust garden art!
I do like garden art. One of these days I am going to make or purchase a gazing globe (in return I have to find a frog garden object for my husband as he likes frogs). I also enjoy fountains and birdbaths. and some statuary.

Can’t afford luxuries like these so do not have any. If I did it would probably include cats as I like them. I put odd shaped pieces of wood as I find them when we cut wood for the stove for winter in my garden south of the house.
