Small Celebrations

August 13th, 2014

The other day I went out to the chicken coop and found a tiny pullet egg from one of our chicks. Remember those little fur balls that hatched out way back in the spring?

I’ve been waiting patiently, figuring it wouldn’t happen until a few weeks from now. But there it was – one small egg nestled in among the large ones. I really need to get some photos of this batch of chickens and the other brood that hatched out this year. They turned out to be stunning in color, mostly white and black with really interesting markings. Most of them were a mix of our Silver Laced Wyandotte rooster and another Wyandotte hen. This is a small celebration since this egg came from an egg laid by one of our hens that was hatched out here. They are 100% Chiot’s Run chickens!

What small things are you celebrating this week?

How cool is it to have a 100% homegrown egg!! We just had our first eggs from one of the new pullets this week too. She’d been acting different for a few days so I knew it was coming, and now she’s hanging out more with her older “sisters.” It’s like she graduated–so fun to watch the process.

Wow! When were they hatched? I got mine mid-May, at 3 days old. No eggs yet, but they are looking pretty big and chicken-y these days.

They hatched towards the end of April. Last year my late April chicks started laying in late August, these ladies are a few weeks earlier than I expected, though only one is laying right now.

Susy, there’s so many small things to celebrate. Yesterday was a work day at Terra Nova Gardens. As I was driving down the street a week ago I saw a pile of rocks from a limestone wall tear out. The neighborhood where I live is filled with these rock walls. The home owner as it turns out was rebuilding the wall with the concrete wall blocks. I was able to acquire the sizeable pile of limestone rocks to my great glee and haul them to Terra Nova Gardens. Yesterday was the beginning of rebuilding my raised beds there with a double layer of limestone rocks to hold the dirt in the bed. So we have to be sure not to miss the little things in life that can be a blessing, don’t you think?

Have a great Chiots small celebration day.
