Fall Peas
My fall peas are just reaching the point where they’re starting to fill out the pods. Truth be told I should have planted them a few weeks earlier, but I couldn’t since the garlic wasn’t ready to be harvested yet.
When it comes to fall/winter gardening, the cool weather isn’t quite as big of a deal as the reduced daylight hours. Things are much slower to mature since they’re getting 3-5 fewer hours of sunlight. That’s definitely something to remember when sowing for a second harvest.
I’m crossing my fingers that they’ll survive long enough to produce a decent crop for the freezer.
Do you have any fall/winter crops that are ready to harvest?

weather put constraints into gardening in your place…, with all year round summer, over here we tend to be a little bit casual with gardening…

When we got back from a 5 day trip my first stop was the garden. I looked around and thought, “that’s odd, I do not remember planting scallions”. Then I realized that it was my beautiful new kale seedlings with leaves eaten off by the cabbage worms! I am hoping that they recover.
The spinach is doing fine.

Susy, nope I’ve just resolved to putting this year’s garden to bed and planning for a better next year. I just ordered the best seed catalog ever from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. They have the most amazing seed catalog. This year its 352 pages long and costs $5. They have a free one too and it’s quite amazing as well for being free. The purchased one is filled with stories and recipes as well as seeds that can be purchased. All the seeds are heirloom seeds. I think they have a big seed warehouse in Pennsylvania some where. They also have a warehouse in California and the original in Missouri. I like all seed catalogs but Baker Creek is the one I cherish the most.
I’m off to Texas today to visit my grandson and won’t be online until Tuesday. Have a great weekend. My daughter and I will be driving many miles today and Monday. Bradley’s birthday is Monday so the party will be on Saturday. The trip is the first of many I expect. As you remember he lived here with his mom and me for five years but now lives with his Dad in Texas.
Have a great fall garden harvesting day.

Wow. I haven’t even planted fall stuff yet. I need to wait for it to get a little cooler, I think.

Harvested beets and carrots yesterday! Broccoli is getting close, not sure if the cauliflower will mature soon enough. I had some volunteer peas I that are starting to fill out.

I just picked my first batch of fall peas. What’s left after a little stir-fry will go into the freezer, with more on the way (I hope). My early crop was all sold at the farmer’s market; I save the fall peas for myself.
I have beets and carrots, kale and purple cauliflower, lots of lettuce and a few rutabagas; the cabbages are not heading up as I hoped, but the leeks are gorgeous. So much bounty still! And with the gorgeous fall colors we’re having this year, it’s such a treat to be playing in the garden.

One of our goals for this years garden was to try some fall/winter planting. We do have a some things ready to harvest. Peas, carrots, beets, kale, lettuce, chard and after a frost, a few parsnips and some winter apples.
