Friday Favorite: The Lemon Rug

October 31st, 2014

Yesterday I hauled my wool lemon rug out of storage and gave it a thorough cleaning to freshen it up. This rug has been with use for a very long time, probably for 15 years. It has been in our living room and our dining room, most recently it has spent many years in storage. Now that I finally got the office painted, I decided it would be the perfect way to brighten up that space.

There isn’t any flooring in this house, it’s mostly painted subfloor. The paint is chipping and the top layers of the plywood is starting to peel up, which makes for an ugly floor and a tough time cleaning. I’m painting the floor in the office black just like I did in our bedroom.

This will seal up the floors once more and make them a little easier to clean. I think the lemon rug will also look nice with a black border.

It’s not beautiful hardwood flooring, but it will do until that time comes and it’s certainly much better than what is in there now. I’m a big rug person, I love a beautiful wool rug underfoot.

Are you a rug person, or do you prefer plain floors?

Wool rugs, all the way. They actually repel dirt and hide what does accumulate–especially the darker ones–make it easier on the feet to walk around, and, most important in a house like ours, keep us up off the freezing floor.

That’s what I love so much about wool rugs, it’s really are the only option when it comes to rugs. I love that they last forever and seem to get better with age!

Were the carpets already removed when you moved in, or did you pu the up with the living room carpets?

I like your painted floors, but there are also some interesting floors out there made with plywood (to look like a wood floor). I wondered if you had already figured out what to do with the living room floor or have decided to leave it as is? I really like your lemon rug by the way.

Have you thought about inexpensive wainscoting too, by using trim pieces to the wall? I think white wainscoting would look great with the black floor and lemon rug.

There was only carpet in the living room, the floors in most of the rooms were painted subfloor already. The previous owners never bothered to put down flooring.

Susy, my house has the real 1960s hard wood floors through out the entire house. All the floors were covered with carpet when we bought the house and little did we know that hidden beneath the ugly green carpet was beautiful hard wood floors. The carpet became so worn that it needed replaced and much to our surprise when we pulled up the carpet there was the beautiful unused hard wood floor. Now 29 years later the floor is quite used and a large area rug covers the nicks and scrapes in the center of the living room traffic area. Another area rug covers the space in the computer room next to the laundry room. It was ugly brown carpet but got wet from a laundry room disaster. When we pulled up the carpet there we found commercial grade floor title. The area rug keeps the used portion of the floor warmer in the winter as this room just sits on the concrete slab.

Area rugs are my best friend. I like them because cleaning can be accomplished under the rug without too much work. In my humble opinion, it’s a good way to soften up the room but still have the look of hard wood around the edges. It’s a good floor marriage. And it’s easier to change when the need arises.

Have a great lemon rug day.

We have original 1930 pine floors. I love them though they do squeak and can be chilly. I like the idea of a rug but our one big wool rug gets dirty so fast – it makes big wool dust bunnies – that it makes me a little crazy. Plus it’s itchy to lay on.

I love that rug! It’s definitely bright and cheerful!

I’m really intrigued by the fact that your floors are painted subflooring. We have really ugly shag carpeting in one of the upstairs bedrooms that needs replaced when the stepson moves his furniture out. Painting the floor underneath would be super easy and inexpensive for us to do!
