Winter Garden

January 5th, 2015

In my office I have quite a winter garden growing. It’s not for me, it’s for the chickens. I’m writing an article for Grit Magazine about small scale fodder for livestock and thus I’m experimenting with the best methods for small scale fodder systems. Over the past couple weeks I’ve been working on perfectly my system.

It’s certainly nice to see so much green out of the corner of my eye while I work. In a few days these trays will be a carpet of lush barley sprouts ready for the chickens to devour. They grow about an inch a day, which is quite remarkable. I’ve always wanted to have a fodder system for winter chicken greens and I’m thankful for the nudge I needed to finally get it up and running.

Do you have any new experiments going this winter?

Well, I don’t know if it exactly counts, but my wife and I are trying to get our hibiscus plants to bloom now instead of summer in our house in Buffalo, NY. And it’s working! We’re fertilizing a lot and keeping our house pretty humid. Sort of nice to enjoy some blooms now.

Last year, the garden was completely finished by this time. This year, I still have a good production from my green onions. So I guess that counts as an experiment? Instead of harvesting the bulbs, I decided to see just how long I could continue to get fresh green shoots from them – turns out, they just keep on coming! And contrary to what I’ve read/heard from some sources, the greens are just as flavorful and pungent this late in the season as they were earlier.

Cherie, profound statement “want to loose weight? Eat less and move more.” Pretty simple, huh. Most don’t have the will power to do it though. TV advertising along with grocery store deals would have us buy more to eat and move less. Lazy Boy recliners are named that for a reason. I have to say that I’m not one that has kept my perfect weight. I’m planning on trying to work on that this year.

Have a great perfect weight year.

oops did it again wrong comment for this post. Here’s the one it should have been.

Susy, I haven’t gotten much farther on the basement growing system. Yesterday was a viral sick day. It brought me down pretty hard. I’m much better today but still a bit weak and tired. I’m hoping to get back to the project maybe tomorrow. I have every thing to start the system. I sure would like to have all nine buckets planted by the end of the week.

Have a great winter garden day.
