Friday Favorite: Nourishing Bone Broth
I grew up in a culture that served consommé as a beverage quite regularly. Now a cup of bone broth is a very comforting thing for me, there really is nothing better on a cold winter day. This time of year I keep a pot of perpetual stock going on the wood stove. I add vegetable trimmings as I get them along with bones and other savory items. It’s really nice to have hot broth ready whenever I want it. For my nourishing bone broth recipe and to read up on the health benefits of broth head on over to this post.
If you’ve never sipped on a nourishing cup of broth you’re missing out. When I drink it I feel like my body reacts like Popeye’s does when he downs a can of spinach. I can tell that it’s nourishing every part of my body from my skin to my joints!
What’s your favorite nourishing beverage?

My MiL told me just yesterday that there was a recent article in the New York Times about the popularity of “broth bars,” where people go and pay what I must imagine is an obscene amount of money for a cup of bone broth. It’s a trend.

I was also going to say broth is all the rage these days – the Today show just had a segment on it as well. It sounds wonderful, and I am going to see if I can track down some cow bones!

Susy, I don’t really make broth per se but I do boil left over bones to make bean soup from ham bones or turkey/chicken noodle soup from turkey/chicken bones. Bones make the best seasoning ever. Simmered meat and fat chunks from the bones add awesome flavor to the soup. I believe that fat should not be totally eliminated from the diet as you do.
Have a great stock making day.

I grew up with bone broth ~ beef and chicken…..I still make it and it is my nourishing drink of choice. I love plunking that gelatinous glob of broth into a pan and heating it up. It always brings me back to my childhood and the comforting food that my Mom and Grandmother made. Reading your blog has gotten me to add greens and an “egg” and I love it! Bone broth is truly my comfort food…..

I’ve read about how healthy bone broths are (maybe on your blog!) We do make our own stock nowadays. My husband makes soup from it and it is so delicious. It’s one of those things that I know the kids will always eat.

Just made some chicken broth today- I have a cold (I never get sick- after twelve years of teaching in St Paul I thought I had an immune system that nothing could get through- but this one was nasty!!) drinking lots of chicken soup, and our friend/farmer Will’s concoction of ginger, lemon, honey and cayenne tea…
