Finally Finished

January 29th, 2015

I finally finished what we’re jokingly calling “the world’s most expensive afghan”. The yarn is beautiful, hand made locally by ontheround. I actually met up with Rachel once to pick up a little extra yarn, we chatted for quite a while.  The yarn isn’t cheap, but then it’s completely worth it to use such a wonderful product. The final afghan is really a work of art, the yarn helps make it perfect!

I blocked it last week and called it officially finished! In case you’re interested in a tutorial on the pattern I used, head on over to Soulstrikke.

I wasn’t a big fan of the edging she used, so I invented my own, essentially continuing the pattern from the squares.

Overall I love the afghan, it’s warm and cozy and oh so bright. I just ordered new furniture for the living room and two of the chairs are upholstered in indigo denim, this afghan will be PERFECT on them. As you can see Dexter has claimed it as his own, perhaps I’ll start calling it “The world’s most expensive cat bed”. I’ve moved on to finished up a cowl, starting a lacy alpaca scarf, and there’s a new afghan in the works. These cold winter evenings have me realizing that I need a stack of afghans in the living room to snuggle under. Of course there are thousands of other projects I’d love to make, head on over to my crochet pinboard to see what I’ve collected.

Have you finished up any projects recently?

I just finished a couple pairs of socks for the holidays, and am working on another for a friend. Like you, I have so many projects in the pipeline, and am feverishly working on them before gardening season. Seeding starts this weekend for us, and I am already a week behind. Seesh.

    You’re blanket looks fabulous!

Nice! Can’t wait to see the new living room. I know this blog is more geared around food , but I also love seeing how people live inside too. What did you decide to do with your floors?

Does anyone else see the pictures as the size of peanuts?

Susy, most of my projects are a work in progress. On occasion, I will get one finished. I did get my basement growing system all set up and ready to be planted. The 60 degree days gave me a window of opportunity to mix up the soil for the eight five gallon buckets. They are ready for planting which will happen probably in March. I really wanted to grow some winter salad but life events got in the way and now it’s a bit too late for that. Next winter I will be ready to try that experiment for sure. The fiber pots for seed starting are filled with soil and are soaking up water to begin the onion seed starting next week. February is the official beginning of the gardening season for me.

Have a great winter project finishing day.

I always cringe when I see people using nice merino for an afghan….I can’t imagine the price! I know they are a lot nicer than bulk acrylic from the craft store, but yikes, my budget would faint!

That said, yours turned out beautifully! I’ve got a ton of acrylic that was left over from my grandmother when she passed and I am not in need of any more blankets around here and I’m on the tail end of friends having babies, so my next go-to would be to make cat blankets for the animal shelter. As you know, cats are drawn to yarn like they are to laptops! ;)

LOL – cats are drawn to laptops, not sure why.

I’d crochet with acrylic yarn, but I have sensory issues that make it nearly impossible. In fact I haven’t crocheted much in years because I simply can’t take the feel of acrylic – I know, kinda crazy. If I didn’t use natural fiber I wouldn’t crochet. Thankfully you can find good natural fiber for about the price of acrylic a few places locally. I will spend on pricey yarn for special projects.

I’ve always been really weird about fibers when it comes to clothing, bedding, towels, etc. Even when I was a kid I refused to sleep on any sheet that wasn’t 100% cotton.

I love your afghan! and am familiar with ontheround (Rachel). I have finished knitting a few hats and mittens, some with my handspun, for gifts. And working on the Ten Stitch blanket. And a pair of socks! I recently finished spinning a skein of yarn, too.

I love it Susy! The colors are so vibrant and cheerful. I can’t help but smile when I see it. Glad Dexter has given it his blessing :)

Oh my. That is a beautiful afghan! LOVE the colours+pattern.
I’ve started selling aprons so am waiting for my fabric to arrive so I can start sewing..one drawback of living in the middle of nowhere; no fabric stores! (or reasonably priced ones)
I love your blog. You have such a simple+beautiful way with words. And your photography and lifestyle is just beautiful. Your blog is a favourite of mine!
