Look Out BELOW

March 17th, 2015

The ice dam on the back of the house is about to let loose. I keep thinking any day now it will startle me and send the cats scurrying to find cover (which is the funniest thing). It keeps hanging farther and farther over the roofline just waiting to come crashing down.

Thankfully they’re not as big as they could be since Mr Chiots knocked them off once already. Otherwise we’d have twice as much ice falling.

It’s a nice reminder that spring is just around the corner!

Any last vestiges of winter in your garden?

When the snow slides off our cabin roof it’s like an avalanche and what noise! The dogs bark though they don’t know what they’re barking at. Our snow is all gone but the garden is a soggy plot we can’t even get near at this point. It’ll dry up soon enough and the work will start!

Susy, Yee Ha, spent the day at Terra Nova Gardens scraping off the weed mess that last year produced when I just threw up my hands and walked away because the weather was so bad and I had no backup plan. No so for this year. Soil temperature was at 47 degrees with all frost gone. Today the temperature was a more normal 55 degrees with 31 degree for a night time low. This time of the year when the soil is soft is the best time for weed clean up. Just a little tug will pull them right out of the ground roots and all. Just a few more days and I’ll be ready for planting. That’s a couple months away for tomatoes and other warm weather plants. I’m still holding off another week before starting the tomato seeds. This is going to be a good year. I can just feel it in my bones which are a little achy after digging up weeds all day. I hope when your dam breaks loose it will not damage anything.

Have a great anticipation ice dam day.
