Maple Sapping

March 30th, 2015

‘Tis the season for maple sap. This year I’m not doing as much as I usually do. The snow is still way to deep to get to many of my trees and collecting sap in snowshoes isn’t the easiest thing in the world. I tapped our Big Old sugar maple right across the driveway from the house (photo from last year, there’s still a foot of snow on the ground here).

I’m also making it a light sugaring year because I’m having some chiropractic work done for my scoliosis, which acts up every now and then. I’m hoping to get it all straightened out before gardening season is in full swing. I’m keeping my fingers crossed the pain is much more bearable at that point in time, not carrying heavy buckets of sap through the woods should help. I should still get a gallon or so of syrup, even just from this one tree. That is more than enough since I still have three gallons left from last year.

What’s happening in your garden this week?

I hope the chiropractor brings you relief. I love reading about your adventures, especially those so quintessentially Maine like sugaring! Have fun enjoying the season change~

We’re slowly getting on top of the months of neglect in the yard. It’s looking presentable again.

Hope you’re feeling better soon. My mom and SIL spend a lot of time at the chiro.

My husband deals with scoliosis too. Laboring around our home takes its toll on his back, but he seems to have figured out when he needs an adjustment.

As for the garden, kale and spinach seeds have sprouted and we’re planting potatoes today. I chose Purple Viking since you mentioned last year what a great producer they are.

My garden is still covered in snow, more than a foot everywhere and more in many places. Looks like a few more weeks before I’ll be doing anything. But we did attend maple syrup weekend in NH this past weekend (yesterday). it’s a slow start to the maple syrup season but they’re hopeful they can catch up with some high 40s forecast for highs this week. I’m sorry you’re in pain and hope it’s resolved quickly.

So far, the garlic is up from last fall, and cabbages and Brussels sprouts have come up in the hot bed. This week is supposed to be warmer, so I am hoping to start planting some seeds.
