Friday Favorite: Work in Print
I’ve been writing for various blogs for 6 years now. Blog authoring is nice, but it’s not quite the same as writing something that goes into a print magazine. While I love both, there’s something so much more tangible and satisfying about seeing your work printed in a glossy magazine!
Northern Gardener is one magazine I write article for on occasion. I also just submitted an article that will be printed in Grit Magazine this summer. I have always loved looking through magazines. There’s something about the thin shiny paper and the big images.
Selling photos to various sources and writing these articles is how I keep the bills paid for this blog. If it didn’t provide these kinds of opportunities I would never be able to afford the monthly hosting bill ($140/month) and the other expenses associated with maintaining it. What’s your favorite gardening magazine?
Susy, I guess my blogging officially started about six years ago but writing of blog entry type media started much earlier than that. I sent out over 200 emails frequently that looked very similar to blog entries way before I discovered blogs. My email address list was made up of friends, family, and neighbors all across the nation. I never knew exactly how big my influence was because those that read them would send them on to others and they would send them on again. Those days passed with great memories as I moved into blogs and facebook.
I often thought about writing a book about Terra Nova Gardens but it just seems to be such a daunting task. Magazine articles? To me they are almost as difficult to write as a book. Being shorter would have an advantage and yet would be more of a challenge to say what I thought should be said with limited words. I wouldn’t even know where to begin to submit an article. Maybe I’ll look into it next Winter when winds are howling and snow is accumulating outside on the ground.

Actually, I am not even subscribed to any gardening magazines. Occasionally I I borrow one at the library, though. How I would love to read that article about carrots, though! This is going to be MY year of the carrot. I’ve ordered some different colors and already planted some. I hope they thrive.
