Hello Tom
The tom turkey I got this spring has been fantastic. He got the job done, our turkey hen hatched out a dozen poults and we have a small flock of turkeys running around now. Poor Tom started molting not long after mating season was over, he was a sad sight to be sure. The poor guy looked like he had gotten run over with the brush hog.
Thankfully his feathers are almost all back in and he’s looking quite dapper once again. I’m eagerly anticipating seeing the poults when they grow up. They will have an interesting mix of both of their parents. Dad is a Bourbon and mom is a Wishard Bronze. There are 3 different looks in the cutlets, soon enough they’ll be big and look like adults.
What fun things are going on in your garden?Â

He is a fine looking fellow! I didn’t know baby turkeys were called cutlets! :) Any photos of them? Are turkeys good, protective moms like chickens are?

Susy, Hmmm, not much fun going on in the garden right now. I’m making progress against the battle to keep animals and weeds out of the garden. The garden is suffering a bit as I’m determined to get the deer fence complete this year. I didn’t really plant a lot this year with the anticipation of getting the garden fence deer high, raccoon tight, and groundhog deep. It has been a long journey but I can finally see the end coming before the snow flies. My source for fencing dried up so I will have build the last three panels from scratch. They won’t match the rest of the fence but they will be in the back corner practically unnoticeable. So gardening marches on.
Have a great fun turkey raising day.

My Bourbon Tom has one tail feather left. He certainly isn’t the handsome dude he was during breeding season. He did father a successful clutch with my Narragansett hen so I have 9 ten day old poults. Thank goodness I purchased some Bourbon poults this spring so I’ll have 6 of them to have processed in Nov. I hope to keep a Bourbon hen or two for next spring’s babies.
