Rain, Sweet Rain
It’s been dry here in Maine like it has been in other parts of the country. During half of June, all of July, and half of August we didn’t get much rain at all. A tenth of an inch here, a tenth of an inch there, it didn’t even add up to an inch.
Then we got three inches in one day, which is a lot, all at once, but I’ll take it!!! It looks like we’ll have a lot of rain over the coming week, which is great because the apple trees are all wilted and drooping heavily with fruit. Hopefully my fall crops will certainly appreciate it, I’ll be out planting them tomorrow in preparation for a good rain.
How’s the rain situation in your garden?

Susy, we just went through a rain cycle here in Nebraska that dumped five inches of rain in two days. The temperatures are unusually cool. The low last night was 53. That’s a full 10 degrees below the average for this time of the year. The tomatoes continue to trickle in but there’s not a big flush like is supposed to happen this time of the year. Other things like cucumbers and green beans were prolific and the green peppers good but not so outstanding. It’s been an unusual year to say the least.
Have a great day in the Maine garden.

The rain situation has been so bad that my garden never really got off the ground. We usually are bemoaning having too much rain in June, but our June was the hottest and driest on record. Things never really got rooted in before a serious heat wave and everything basically fried. I got dripline out to most of my new trees and shrubs and have focused on keeping them alive, but it was a sad gardening year!

Our situation is pretty dire here in Texas. After a deluge in the spring we returned to drought conditions and a fire ban for our county. We had a small smattering of rain recently but not enough to quench the thirst.

Here in NE Ohio, we got LOTS of rain.. My garden is the best its EVER been because of it.. We need some now and I’ve heard its on the radar.. so hopefully we’ll get some today or tomorrow. We got a heavy sprinkle yesterday but it was really just a bit of a spit.. we need a deep soaking.

Our immediate area must be a little above average in rain. The precipitation trend from last winter’s snowiest part of the state is continuing. The pond isn’t down to it’s normal August level. Ten miles north, you can see the difference in the trees because of the lack of rain. The leaves are browning on the poplars. Swamp maples are already red in the un-swampy bogs. We fished on Spednic Lake yesterday and hit a rock we didn’t know is in the middle of the lake. We were very careful because the water is lower than we’ve ever seen.
