The Apple

September 17th, 2015

I’ve been in Ohio for a few days and walking around her garden. As you can see, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Momsgarden
I used to spend a lot of time working in this garden with my mom. It’s interesting to see it change from year to year without seeing it continually.

Did your parents garden?

My mum has a small patio garden that is very cottage like. She swears every year she is going to pull everything up and plant just dwarf shrubs so she doesn’t have to do anything. I get my love of gardening from my grandparents though. Both sides had gardens and I spent loads of time helping out.

Yes, both of my parents were avid gardeners and grandparents too, so yes, the apple in our gardens also didn’t fall very far. I lost my Mum last Thanksgiving but I still tend her garden, which is bittersweet to say the least. One of the very hardest things I have ever done though was laying a bouquet of the flowers she grew in her garden on her gravesite, this summer.
Gardens can mean so very many things and continue a spirituality long after the gardener is gone….

Susy, yes, my mom gardened but I don’t remember much about it except for playing around the edge as she did what ever she did in the garden. I must have picked up some garden skills because I’ve always wanted a garden through out my life. I didn’t get any family help with any part of gardening including the eating of it and finally just gave it up for many decades until retirement brought back the desire. It seems that most of those garden skills stuck with me and even though I don’t remember being taught how to do things it just comes naturally. Maybe it’s from the summers on my uncle’s row crop farm. I always was a chemical free gardener even way back when my attempts were in the 1970s and 1980s.

Have a great mom’s garden day.

We had a small garden growing up that Mom planned out. All I recall are tomatoes, a watermelon patch, and tulips. The flower I picked out to grow there was hollyhock. We had a huge variety and they were brilliant! Mom and I loved going out to make hollyhock dolls.

She always has something growing, but as she has aged, has limited herself mainly to avoid having to water.
