Planting for Next Year

October 6th, 2015

I love garlic because you plant it in the fall and harvest the following summer. It’s in the ground for quite a while, but it’s nice to know it’s there in the deepest part of winter. As soon as spring arrives it pops out of the ground and gives you hope that the garden will flourish for another year.

The past couple years I’ve been able to save my own seed garlic, which can really save you a bundle! Out of the 10 or so varieties I used to grow, I’ve narrowed it down to five of my favorites. ‘Music’ is a real winner in my garden, I keep thinking of only planting that variety. It produces HUGE heads with giant cloves. I like that you only have to peel one instead of a few when you’re cooking.

Yesterday, I planted about 100 garlic cloves and a small amount of potato onions. My garlic is planted 6 inches apart in a big row with 12 inches between the individual rows. I plant four rows wide with walkways on either side. I have found this to be perfect spacing for garlic, they produce very well and I have less area to weed.

Do you grow garlic in your garden? Do you have a favorite variety?

I have in years past, but I don’t know what the variety was. It was just bulbs that started to sprout that I’d got at the grocers. I’m thinking about putting in a few bulbs in my tiny patio garden but I don’t know what variety to try.

When will you harvest the potato onions?

Curious as to why you like the Music garlic? I haven’t tried it yet, but love garlic and am looking to expand to some now cultivars :)

I like it because it grows well, has large cloves on each bulb. Usually there will we between 4-5 cloves on each bulb. I like peeling one garlic clove instead of many when I’m cooking. It also stores well.

I love planting garlic–such big rewards for so little effort! I’ll have to give ‘Music’ a try since peeling cloves is my least favorite thing about garlic :)

I wait until the last week of Oct. to plant my garlic because the advice always is to plant it late enough so it doesn’t break the surface of the soil before a hard freeze.

Susy, I really should plant some garlic but I seriously don’t use it in cooking. I should be doing that as well but no one else in the family likes the taste of garlic. I did get a good harvest of onions and I still have to check out the potatoes. I think they are ready to be dug up. Every thing is done for this year. I really have to harvest the dry beans and let them dry some more before putting them in a jar and using them for soups this Winter. Over all it’s been a good year for gardens here in Nebraska.

Have a great end of year garden harvest day.
