Weariness
This time of the year I start getting weary. There’s a ton that needs done in the garden to make it ready for winter, so all spare moments are spent doing that. As I’m doing all these chores, my mind is looking forward to the winter rest period. Evenings spent reading on the couch, hats finally being crocheted, quilts being made, coloring books being filled with color…
Living in a place with winter is a beautiful thing!
Are you looking forward to a period of rest in from the garden?

Yes I am Susy!!
I love the way you eloquently describe life’s beautiful, often unoticed moments, that should not be taken for granted.
Thank you for that.

I live in Florida and winter is our bigger food production time. I have 3 4’X4′ gardens and several large pots. I am growing tomatoes, cabbage, garlic, broccoli, and squash, among other things. Our summer, I have discovered, is terrible for vegetables. I have only been here for a couple of years and it is a real learning process for me!

Yes! A few more weeks of clean-up and winter prep, and I’m very much looking forward to some quiet time indoors. Plenty of time to revisit old garden plans and chip away at other projects in our (well-loved) little old house.

I’m so looking forward to a season of rest! Thank goodness for winters.
Your words have me wondering if society wouldn’t be a little better off with a period of rest every year. Turn off the internet, require people to stay home, recharge, reconnect with their loved ones.
Sometimes I wonder if those who came before us had it easier in that sense. If I want that type of rest it takes major effort to orchestrate.
Thank you for your words.

I have the opposite problem. I grew up in Alaska and took with it a lifetime case of SAD. This is the time of year I have to make sure I don’t get too much rest. Rest quickly goes from being a pleasant thing to a depressive state. I have to make sure I get outside, preferably sooner rather than later in the day.

Susie, don’t know HOW you take care of all you have to do. It amazing.
Especially at this time of year when there is soooo much to do. As I get older I try to keep in mind making things easier for us. I try to buy new plants that don’t require any maintenance and refrain from making new beds, maybe just enlarging a little the ones I already have.

Susie, yes, winter is a change of focus but not so much a rest. After nine months of garden season, the inside of the house is a wreck. So as garden time winds down, inside projects gear up. I know I’ve mentioned my basement before but this year my grandson is putting on the pressure to get it cleaned out. He wants it for his area. It will be a good incentive to get the final desire to get the job done. He even volunteered to help clean it up. Who could refuse a offer like that?
Have a great winter rest anticipation day.

This is the first year that I can remember in ages where I truly look forward to the quiet solitude of winter. I have so many indoor projects and hobbies that I have been wanting to tackle but the yard work comes first all spring/summer/fall. I’ve done a better job this year of getting ready for winter but there are always a few things left undone. I have many crafts in progress and when I finally get some paperwork done I can give them my “almost” undivided attention!
