Spring Chores

March 14th, 2016

Spring is an exciting time to be a gardener, there are seeds or order, tiny seedlings to tend, gardens to plan, and so much more. Then there are all the chores that come with having a garden. Things that sometimes get put off because they’re not as fun as other things. Like picking up sticks, raking leaves, tidying up, picking up pounds and pounds of rocks, and so many more things.
raking leaves
Yesterday, I spent the afternoon raking all the leaf/grass clipping back under the apple trees. I put them there last fall and the chickens kicked them all out this spring. I could have fenced them early, but I know they’re eating bugs and aerating the mulch. Spending a day raking it back under the trees is probably worth it. I also picked up what seemed like hundreds of sticks, dug all the soil out from around the rocks in the back of the house….all back breaking chores, but things that are perfect on these warm spring days before you can dig into the garden and really get going.

What chores did you get done this weekend?

Susy, weekends are not garden time for me. Family time happens on weekends. Before the daylight savings time stole my early morning light, I spent two hours a day at the garden. As a result five and a half raised beds were fully prepared for planting which won’t happen for another two months but weed control will be done between now and then so that weeds will be gone by planting time. Mulching started around the raised beds in the sweet corn fortress. The fortress is starting to look pretty sharp. I’m not sure I’ll get to Terra Nova Gardens much this week. The four raised beds in the back yard will received the love and attention this week. I still have to set up my rain water catch system before the April rains begin. So I agree there are lots of task that need doing that are not part of planting and growing but have to be done.

Have a great day out in the Maine garden.

This weekend was a little bit of a hands off weekend. We had a ton of rain last week so things are drying out. I pulled a few weeks here and there, but mostly just enjoyed the garden.

Will there be a 5×5 challenge again this year?

Not an official one, but feel free to do it if you want to!
