Surprise

April 14th, 2016

I’ve been dealing with a massive headache this week, probably due to the huge weather system that moved through. After being down for the count on Monday & Tuesday, I’m finally back in business. I have a few pumpkins that were starting to get softs spots, so I decided to feed them to the chickens. When I cut one open the seeds in side were already starting to germinate.

What a fantastic thing to see. I love how plants are always trying to reproduce against all odds, it’s quite an amazing thing we get to experience over and over again as gardeners.

Have you noticed anything amazing recently?

Oh shoot! I wish I’d thought to cut open the Butternut squash I put in the food plot. They’ve been frozen for over a week so if there were sprouted seeds I’m sure they’re dead. Next time!

I’m glad you’re feeling better Suzi! I am just amazed at the beauty of springtime again here in my gardens even though I’ve seen it over and over again. Every spring when new life emerges everywhere, it seems like it’s the first time I’ve ever seen it!
Nature is what amazes me! :)

Susie, will you be planting some of those sprouting seeds? The weather has been so sporadic here that nothing is planted except for the potatoes. I’m planning on getting some onions in the ground soon. Well, I did find a surprise in the cabbage patch. A cabbage started to grow on its own and is already starting to form the head. I didn’t know that cabbage would continue to grow from an old root but this one did. I did find one volunteer onion growing but I pulled it out because it’s where I want to plant radishes. It’s always interesting to see what volunteers will come up in the Spring.

The sweet corn fortress will be nearing completion today. I’m hoping to get the last of the insulators on the posts and string the electric wire. Even the grounding rods will perhaps be in the ground by day’s end.

Have a great day finding garden surprises.

My ‘amazing’ is my new bees. How on earth do they know how to do everything that they do? Right now they are busy freeing the queen from the cage that she is kept in for three days (while they get used to her, so that they don’t see her as a stranger and kill her). In the wild they never would have had to free a queen, but yet they know enough to do it. How? I think I’m in for a lot of ‘amazings’ as I get used to these new creatures.
