A Year of Winners
I mentioned a few weeks ago how happy I was that I finally grew some amazing fennel. This year I also managed to grow amazing cauliflower, which I admit, I had almost given up on growing. Cauliflower is a favorite vegetable of mine. I have attempted grow all sorts of heirloom varieties without much success. This year I finally decided to try ‘Bishop’ from Johnny’s Seeds and…..
I only planted four because I didn’t want to lose any garden space to lackluster cauliflower. Now I need to get more seeded for a fall crop! Cauliflower can be a tough vegetable to grow, the heirlooms are especially picky. I’m hoping this variety will be successful for me in years to come, only time will tell. Until then, I’ll be happily eating these lovely vegetables and relishing another success in the garden this year.
What vegetables do you have a hard time growing?

Susy, this year it seems that germination of any of the seeds were poor. Half of what I planted were plants from the local nursery. The only thing that seems to do well was the sweet corn. It has two and some times three ears on each stalk. The flower seeds did well this year but it was a challenge to get six pumpkins plants to grow from an entire package of about 20 seeds. It’s been a strange year for germination that’s for sure. The green pepper leaves have all turned wrinklely. They did that last year but snapped out of it after a time. This year their not snapping out of it. The tomatoes are very slow to come. I’ve been harvesting one here and there but nothing significant just yet. The cucumbers produced about five or six nice cukes and shriveled up and died. No bugs or diseases that I could see. It’s been a very different kind of year here in Nebraska.
Have a great cauliflower eating day.

Brassicas! Did you start them indoors and transplant or direct sow? I never get the timing right, and even if I do, the bugs (cabbage worm, white fly) are relentless. Last year, I managed to get a fantastic fall crop of Napa cabbage and baby bok choy, so that was quite a triumph.
Speaking of fennel, I planted preludio fennel this spring and have a couple hanging on underneath other things. I am hoping they will still head up.
Another difficulty was artichoke–your previous post made me want to try again!
