Friday Favorite: Compost Treasures

September 30th, 2016

It’s always a happy find when you come across something that shouldn’t be in the compost pile. On Sunday I came across a fork. I’ve been known to find all sorts of things in the compost pile, knives, wood spoons, serving spoons, lids, etc.

What sorts of things have you found in your compost pile?

Susy, my compost pile doesn’t have surprises like yours but my garden does. When I first started gardening there, it wasn’t uncommon to find car parts, appliance parts, doll parts, clothes, and all sorts of things. The vacant lot had been the neighborhood dumping ground for many years. Today, I find such things very rarely. I’m not sure about where the neighborhood dumps now but it’s not on my garden.

When I find such things in the yard or garden, I like to imagine what the history of the piece could be. Who bought it new; how long did they use it; how did it end up in the compost; what will it be used for now?

Have a great compost treasures day.
