Quote of the Day: Andrew Wyeth

February 16th, 2017

“I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure in the garden…”

Andrew Wyeth

Of course I’m not sure how much of the garden’s structure you can see when it’s buried below 6 feet of snow, but at least you get to see it for part of the winter.

What’s your favorite season to notice structure?

Here, that would be spring before everything is fully leafed out but still green and lush!
What is that building in your first photo? A smokehouse or just your grden shed? It looks like it just belongs there and so pretty with the snow on it’s slanted roof!

Hi, me again! Is that your smokehouse or just a shed in your first photo?
It’s really pretty sitting out there with all that snow!

It’s actually a wood fired sauna. The previous owners built it way back when they first built the house and didn’t have indoor plumbing. That’s what they used to get clean. We use it a fair amount in the winter, generally Sunday evenings are spent relaxing in the sauna. It’s a very cute little building. If we didn’t use it as a sauna and if it were in a different spot I’d turn it into a garden shed.

OH my gosh, it’s perfect for that! Do you have a photo of the interior that you could show us? Have you read the book, “Maine Farm”…it’s about a year in the life of the people that bought the Nearing’s old farmstead in mid coast Maine. (Penobscot bay)
They also built a sauna on the property right above their pond…that they dug..and in the winter months would plunge in to that icy cold water after heating up in their sauna…Brrrr!
    It’s a lovely book!

Beautiful! It’s funny he built it so large…maybe he had a big family or lots of friends! So! After you heat up, do you step outside and roll in the snow? Now that would be quite invigorating, don’t you think? :)
