Oh The Weather Outside is Frightful

March 16th, 2017

You’ve probably heard about the big blizzard we had roll through New England on Tuesday. It dropped 16-18 inches of snow outside, on the garden that was bare and thawed just last week. Snow in March isn’t uncommon, though this much snow is a bit of a surprise. That’s Ok though, I have loads of lovely plants under the grow lights.

The first batch of lettuce seedlings need thinning, that means I’ll have a homegrown salad later this week. The alyssum and violets are starting to germinate, I’m hoping they will provide some needed color very early this summer.

What’s growing under you grow lights?

Susy, my lettuce plants are six inches high and growing. The ground is no where ready to plant any thing here. We didn’t get the snow that you did but just when the ground is supposed to be warming up, the temps are in the upper teens at night and barely above freezing during the day. After an entire week of this weather the ground is now frozen solid again. Like you I think I’m going to have to eat the tray of lettuce plants as greens in a salad and plant another tray of lettuce. All the cold weather plants are going to be planted out really late this year. Before all this cold weather I measured the soil temperature at 35 degrees but I expect it is much colder now. It’s already shaping up to be a very different gardening year in Nebraska.

I have some marigolds about an inch high, onions and cabbage six inches up and tomatoes and green peppers that are just popping through the soil. Now the weather outside just has to co operate a little bit before the gardens can be planted.

Have a great snow covered day under the grow lights.

No grow lights, but I have seedlings on my windowsill – basil, arugula, parsley, thyme, cilantro, cress… I’ve been enjoying sampling them for the last few weeks. They will be eaten before my garden is ready though. I usually direct seed into the garden instead of starting seedlings to plant out.

In the winter we eat vegetable from the freezer, but I still crave lettuce and greens. My favorite winter salad...
