New Vines

April 19th, 2017

One thing I need to work on in this garden is vertical height. I need more climbing vines, more tall shrubs, more small trees, and a few specimen trees. Starting with climbing vines seemed like the easiest way to work on this. Lucky me two weeks ago when I went to a local store and they had clematis for $6.99 each.

I bought one of each variety and potted them up when I got home.

They’re currently growing very nicely on the back porch (didn’t think about getting photos until it was dark). One of them has shoots that are 6 inches tall already. I’m looking forward to adding these lovelies to a few areas to add a bit of beauty and height.

What’s your favorite climber?

I live much further down south and need to be able to provide shade for the animals during the summer.

Which makes hops a wonderful choice. Such a fast grower and climber and the leaves are so dense that little sun gets thru to underneath. So now I have it climbing up the chain link fence where one of my chicken coops is sited.

Another big favorite, this time due to the beauty, is Purple Hyacinth Bean. Although it won’t even get started til the weather has truly warmed up and has been for a while. But when those flowers start and then those gorgeous purple pods, it is a sight to behold

I love both of those! The hyacinth bean vine is a favorite and saving seed is easy. I use the dried hops flower as a tea for sleep.

I love Clematis too…they grow beautifully here in the PNW. We have a really beautiful evergreen variety too that is white flowering. When growing any type of vine, I like to make sure it has a 3 season beauty and will it provide anything for wildlife or humans…which is why climbing beans are nice…I like the scarlet runner bean! Climbing hydrangeas are quite beautiful too!
Remember with vines…the first year they sleep, the second year they creep and the 3rd year they leap! :)

Well, what about climbing roses….I love them. Also, what about wine. There are some that should thrive in your climate as well, and you might end up with something nice to eat at the end of the season.

But yes, simply for looks, I love clematis, and there is nothing nicer than honeysuckle. I love the scent! And then there is wisteria. Oh, and jasmine.
