Oh Tom…

May 4th, 2017

One of things about having turkeys as livestock, is that it seems to attract the tom turkeys during spring mating season. We’ve been seeing this beautiful tom every so often. He’s the biggest, nicest wild turkey I’ve seen. On Monday we spent the entire day dancing for our turkey hens outside the electric fence. Of course our tom spent the day inside dancing right alongside him. He was too busy dancing to eat anything in the garden, which was the only reason I didn’t chase him off.

Amazingly, he was back the next morning as well, dancing away. Luckily we finally got him to move on. No bought this isn’t the last of him we will see.  Wild turkeys are such amazing birds (so are the domesticated ones we keep).

What sorts of wildlife you get to see in your back yard?

that is a beautiful bird. are they territorial? would you ever try to let him breed with your females?

is there a hunting season for wild turkeys? If so, have you guys ever participated in that?

the only things we have around here are the typical coyotes, skunks, raccoons, and roadrunners. not nearly as exciting as what’s in your yard!

They don’t seem to fight with my birds. I have a tom turkey so I don’t need him to breed with my hens, I’d be afraid that he’d fight with my adult tom if he tried. For the most part they dance around and then the wild ones leave. My turkeys are kept behind electric net fencing.

Mine are kept behind an electric poultry net fence, but when they free roamed they chased the foxes off. If you have a few adults they seem to be great guard birds.
