Seasonal Goodness
It’s rhubarb season here in Maine, my six rhubarb plants are finally mature enough that I can harvest as much rhubarb as I want. Three of my plants are old fashioned rhubarb and three are ‘Glaskins Perpetual’ rhubarb (which means it’s supposed to be harvested all summer long).
I make a variety of rhubarb products, two of our favorites are rhubarb syrup to mix with soda water and rhubarb BBQ sauce. A decent amount of rhubarb finds its way into the freezer to make strawberry rhubarb semifreddo in the middle of winter. Rhubarb is one of those things that people seem to love or hate. I especially love the tartness of it and the unique flavor it imparts.
Do you love or hate rhubarb?

I am a fan of rhubarb, as are my grandparents. I brought a big bunch on my flight to Florida one year so they could enjoy some. That raised some eyebrows in security. They like rhubarb pie, no strawberries.

I have family Rhubarb. I don’t know the origin but my Grandmother gave some roots to my parents 70 years ago. 25 years ago they gave me some roots to plant which are growing beautifully. And of course, I’ve given some roots to my boys. Some will be made into a Rhubarb Crisp for a family get together this weekend.
Each fall, I cover the frosted plants with rabbit manure and sometimes mulch with straw. In the spring, it is a race between the Rhubarb and the Garlic as to who emerges first.

Love It!
My late mother always had it in her garden in Pennsylvania and I even liked a tart stalk of it raw….and then the pies! Oh My!
Starting to expand my North Carolina garden and that will be a must.

Growing up, my dad used to love rhubarb so we’d have it in everything, especially crumble and pie! I don’t have it as much now but I’m trying to grow some with my kids like my father did with me. Love the idea of using it in BBQ sauce! Do you have the recipe? Thanks for sharing!
