How Does Your Edible Garden Grow?

June 6th, 2017

The edible garden is growing like mad. Strawberries are blooming, peas are growing taller, fennel bulbs are fattening up, lettuces are growing fuller and rounder…

The peppers however are not appreciating our cool, rainy spring so far. They’re doing OK, but will be happy when the weather finally warms up.

How’s your edible garden growing? Anything loving or hating your current weather?

We’ve had a good amount of rain over the last week, enough to keep things satisfied after a dry spell. That has brought some cooler evenings once again, which is sooooo nice!

Lots of tomatoes and blackberries over here!

My spinach was producing forever which has been great. Now I’m letting some flower for seed to use in the Fall. I planted beets and am using them for the greens because we don’t super love beets. Pea went in ‘late’ and are short but producing. It has been interesting to have kale this long too!

Susy, the garden looks great so far this year. I’m going to be gone visiting family for about 10 days so I’m not sure what it will look like when I return. Hopefully, my watering preparations will keep the garden alive until I return. I have set up some irrigation on timers to water the tomatoes, green peppers, and the backyard kitchen garden.

The potatoes are on the verge of flowering and look beautiful. The first planting of sweet corn is about a foot tall, the second planting is about six inches, and the third planting is just peeking through the soil. The cucumbers and squash are starting to take off. When I return, the zucchini, swiss chard, and pumpkins will be planted.

I’ve already harvested several handfuls of strawberries. The plants are loaded with berries this year. Of course, I’ll be gone during the prime harvesting time so I’m not sure how many I’ll get to eat. They are so tasty. Nothing like the monster white center ones in the stores.

Have a great day in the garden.

The strawberries, onions, and garlic are doing well. Our weather has been fluctuating wildly, so the heat loving plants grow in spurts when we get a bit of hot weather.

Busy, what are those little upside down pots for in the last photo?
