Friday Favorite: The Little Hosta
I have this lovely little hosta that I got from my mom, she got a start from a friend. I have no idea what variety it is, but it’s one of my favorites. The bluish color and the shape of the leaves is quite lovely. It blooms on very sturdy stems and is a particular favorite with bees and hummingbirds. The plant overall is fairly compact for a hosta, it would be perfect along a path or in the front of a shady border.
I should make a trip over to the Viles Arboretum hosta garden, perhaps I can find it among their collection and figure out what this one is names. You can see photos from my trip there a few years ago in this post.
Lovely!
Is it possibly Mouse Ears?
A diminutive grayish specimen…

Susy, I have a bed of Hostas that reside in a raised bed up next to the back of my house. I’ve done nothing to them in over 30 years of living here and yet they thrive and put on a display of blooms every year. Hostas are indeed a hardy shade plant. Mine grow about 3 foot tall with the flower stem. I suspect it’s about time to do some thing different with them but finding the time is a problem with me.
Have a great Hosta day in the Maine garden.
P.S. This year seems to be a year of hail. Another hail storm with hail the size of nickels came through last night. It hailed for about 10 minutes. The back yard garden survived but has some damage. I haven’t been to Terra Nova Gardens yet to see what has happened there. I most likely won’t get there until Monday.
