Happy Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the civil war), it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.

We celebrated Memorial as most Americans do, gardening, eating and hanging out with friends. On Saturday, my mom and I planted sweet potatoes and peppers in her garden. We enjoyed a cookout with friends on Saturday evening, completes with hamburgers, hotdogs, baked beans. We played corn hole, or bean bag toss, or whatever it’s called in your area. And of course we finished out the evening sitting around a fire.

Whatever your celebrations are this weekend, make sure you take some time to think about the real meaning of this holiday and give thanks to those that have lost their lives in service for our freedoms.

How do you celebrate this weekend if you’re an American? If you live in another country do you have a day to commemorate those that died in military service?

Sending out Some Love

Valentine’s is a funny holiday. Mr Chiots thinks it’s all a setup by card companies to get business after Christmas. We don’t celebrate, no cards, flowers, candy or jewelry is exchanged here at Chiot’s Run. I may make a batch of chocolate covered cherries for us to enjoy. Even though we don’t celebrate, I love Valentine’s day stuff. I don’t know what it is about all the hearts and cards and cheesy stuff that I love, it’s just so FUN! I’ve always wanted to send out Valentine’s to friends, but have never really gotten around to it. This year however, I decided it was time.

I decided to make cards for a few friends that live far away and I don’t get to see often enough. I love the cheesiness of the Valentine’s we used to pass out as kids, so I decided to make mine as cheesy as possible. I had a few popcorn boxes sitting around leftover from a project for our business. I printed out a few things on my computer, then I got out my scissors and tape. I spent an evening being crafty, something I haven’t done in a long time. It was fun. I’m sure they’ll bring a smile to the faces of those that receive them.

I even found a piece of popcorn clip art for the envelopes, which I printed up. At the post office I found these vintage TV show stamps that fit the theme perfectly. I sealed them with a heart sticker to bring the cheese factor up even more. Can’t wait for my friends to find these in their mailboxes! There’s still time to send out a few Valentine’s of your own!

Busy New Year’s Weekend

We had a busy New Year’s weekend, it was so exhausting I didn’t post yesterday (so sorry)! On Wednesday I spent all day cooking, making some bread for our New Year’s Eve meal with friends and a big chocolate cake for desert. I also made a few other things for the freezer. On New Year’s Eve we went with my dad and some friends down to the family hunting cabin for some target practice.

Mr Chiots wants to spend a lot of time practicing this year so he can get a few more deer during hunting season this year.

Our friends got a new gun and had a good time trying it out.

We headed back to their house for a simple meal of meatball subs with a side salad. Shaun makes the meatballs following his grandma’s recipe, they’re quite delicious.

After a filling meal we played cards and chatted, nothing to exciting, but a perfect way to ring in the New Year!

We watched “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” and celebrated the New Year with the usual champagne toast and a kiss from your sweetie.

We hoped to be home and in bed early because we had to be up early the next morning, but we didn’t accomplish that. We were pretty tired New Year’s day, but we still ate a big serving of my dad’s sauerkraut to ensure a prosperous New Year. The kraut we ate was the batch I started in October, it was really really tasty! I was too tired to take any photos of our New Year’s Day celebration (this one was from leftovers we had for lunch yesterday).

Overall it was a great weekend of celebration, I spent all day yesterday sitting on the couch with a good book and cup of tea because I was so tired from the late nights followed by early mornings and all-day activities.

I’m happy that the holiday season is over so I can get back to my normal quiet life at home.

I’m sad to see Christmas has come and gone. We had to work on Saturday so we didn’t get to enjoy our usual day after Christmas traditions. We did take part of yesterday off though to relax and take in a little more of the season. I think one of the things I love this time of year is the peacefulness of it. Even though we’re still very busy this time of year, it seems easier to take time off here and there for family celebrations and for ourselves.

What part of the holidays would you jar up for the rest of the year?

The Day After

I hope all of you who celebrate had a wonderful Christmas yesterday! Mr Chiots and I keep Christmas Day for ourselves, just us two, it’s our family day. For the past 8 years we’ve watched vintage James Bond movies all day. We usually get up and have a big breakfast, yesterday we had french toast. We celebrated by having an extra cup of coffee! We decided to play some video games instead of watching Bond. I’m sure most people don’t think of me as a video game player, but I spent the afternoon with Mr Chiots playing Diablo II. My video game self is much different than my real self, I’m currently a level 34 Barbarian, I wield a maul instead of a shovel.

We finished the evening off with dinner and a movie. Dinner was a delicious local meal of venison pot roast, from Mr Chiot’s own deer, with potatoes from the garden, carrots and onions from the farmer’s market. The movie was The Soloist, which was great. We enjoyed a simple day at home and it was lovely.

Merry Christmas From Chiot’s Run

Since I don’t have all your addresses and mailing out cards to everyone that read would cost a fortune, I’m sending out Christmas Wishes to all of you on my blog. Here’s the card we sent out the family & friends this year. I bought a few cookie cutters from Cincinnati Cake & Candy Supplies and baked up a batch of sweetness for our cards. After a few hours of baking (and eating cookies) we snapped a few photos and our Christmas postcard was off to the printers. I would tell you where we got them printed, but since I wasn’t too happy with their service, no blog love for them.

We got our cards finished a little later than usual. We were waiting for snow so we could make a short Christmas movie card (since that’s what we do), but we got no snow. So we had to make up a card late in the season.
